oh no, not another e23! - pics added

Post by Nebraska_e28 »

Soo.... I kinda stumbled (more or less) on another e23 that is to be used for a parts car (i think). Primarily I wanted it to for the interior. I dont know yet if it runs or how well. It's an 85 735i with some major hackage going on. Are there any parts that I should definitely save for that just in case scenario for my 745i? (pics of monumental hackage forthcoming)

\edit

I admit I'm clueless when it comes to the e23 platform. But I have built a kinda cool e28.

Pictures added for entertainment value. :D

Aren't these wheels from a mid 90's camaro? Any value?

How long before the homeowners' association drops the hammer on your used car lot? ;)

It's a good thing I don't live in a place with more room for cars because I'd surely fill it up.

Aren't the e23s (aside from the HVAC) a lot like oversized e28s? What you've learned on the e28 should apply to the e23 as well. I'm sure you'll do just fine!

Ben Tsongai (sic) and apologies for mangling your name. Was once asked how many cars he owned . His reply was something like : I forget.

My car strategy was developed yrs ago when I had Bugs , Drive one until a better one comes up. Old car becomes parts for new car. I did this with Bugs ,Valiants, Wagoneers and now 528es . In '11 , I scrapped my Wag collection. and 4 E28s . I still have 2 parts superetas and a shed full of stuff I stripped from the cars.

Presently the 2 528es are doing OK .B6 II needs a driver's door. But I just did the rear brakes and the tires are good.. No tunes though. BB Shiftless needs tires , exhaust, I suspect the throttle cable is fraying. It has been acting up, and the tires and open diff are best parked in the snow anyway.

There may be a bit of break in temps later this week & if so, it'll be d-day for this car.

What am I missing?

Items to be removed:

heater & a/c blowers
everything hvac control related
all interior panels, seats/carpet
1 tail light
hood
brake servo, bomb & lines
ps lines

ecu

Might be removed?

3.46 open diff

Yes it's a damn shame. What makes things worse is that it is originally diamondschwarz with a cheap arse asswhite respray.

Cat & muffler appear to have been gone since Y2K, its nothing but straight pipe.

I'll nab the wiper arms. Anything else I should save for the newly acquired 745i?

I can't believe you're not keeping the wheels; they are, um, something else. And definitely keep the bunny from the rear door window.

How about rear axles? Can't hurt to have a pair of spares. And good call on the rear subframe. Changing SF bushings is so easy with the thing off the car. Just replace all the bushings on the SF and trailing arms, powder coat or paint the whole works, and then just swap the two out when you're done. Brake job too. And how about front strut assemblies? If you've ever considered building a set of coilovers, having a spare set around would be nice.

And I'd definitely keep all the lights, headlight buckets, grille, and any trim pieces that are in repairable shape. Anything that might break or get lost on the good car and is in decent shape on the parts car, you'll kick yourself if you let it go with the shell.

Yeah. This was extremely high priced for my blood. I'll strip it down & have a nice stash of parts. Also I'll have saved $$ on shipping. Hopefully I can make 1/2 my money back at the scrapper.

Well... The darn thing runs & motor sounds pretty good despite needing a valve adjustment. This sucks! I was hoping for a loud knocking sound. A bad engine would make for 1 less thing to pull but I guess I have to keep it now.

The other night I had to move the car. It was dark out so I turned on the headlights. To my surprise I was surrounded by what looked like a scene from The Omen!

Red lights everywhere must be feature of certain limited edition model e23's.
