Great day to be a seller of cars and parts (not)

Post by T_C_D »

Earlier this week a potential buyer made an offer on the e30. We agreed on a price and then he told me would have the money this weekend when he sells his car. Of course, he wasn't to be heard from again. Then this morning another young man came to look at the e30. Spent a good amount of time looking it over and test driving it. He said he would let me know when he sells his 2006 Saab vert. Good luck with that. I guess I need to start interviewing potential buyers before letting them even see the car. and to top it off, I received this text this morning.
Todd, I got your number from a member off of bimmerforums.
I was told that you have a junk pile and may have some e24 dashes. I am looking for a junk dash to try to re-vinyl.
Would you be willing to sell one on the cheap?
I am hoping to find one less than $20 plus shipping.

Thanks, (name redacted)
Seriously? WTF Not only do I have a junk pile but I work for free too.

Rant over.

I'm laughing hard at the absurdity of the Saab convertible sale but the junk pile dash may be the best.

I understand. I removed all of the front end from a 95 e34 for a person, then it turns out the person had a 96 e39, they did not know the year and had guessed at 95. So got to work for free and ended up with nothing.

Welcome to my world. God forbid I try to offer something I don't want to ship. I get more time wasters than I know what to do with.

With a car, I don't see anything wrong with only letting people see it who have the cash now. Fortunately, when it comes to cars, I've never had a problem selling them (save for my 535is which was a lot like trying to sell a cheap moonroof local pickup only).

There are days where I just want it all gone after dealing with some of the bottom-feeders that have entered the BMW world. There have always been several but there just seems to be so many more now. I recently had a couple of great transactions with people who knew what they wanted and had the money but they're few and far between now. I look at the crap I've collected over the years and just get stressed out at what I will have to go through selling the stuff off that doesn't fit into my plans or were the spares of spares.

Just received a text asking about the paint. Answered the questions and then the parting text from the potential buyer is:
Just passing interest.

It means he has no interest in buying the car but was curious about the paint.

Well, I guess it's better than the classic waste your time with 100 questions and requests for photos of the foundry markings on fasteners and then go totally silent.

It's mind boggling to me how many people are allowed to exist. We don't need that guy, already have an abundance... They say suicide isn't the answer, it is in this case! :)

I feel your pain. I have a hoard of stuff I'm sitting on but no desire to deal with dickheads. Especially those that live in a town 40 minutes from me.

Ditto. After my part out thread fizzled, I didn't (and still don't) have the desire to keep bumping it.

Have an appointment to show the car on TH. Asked the seller if he had the ability to pay and he told me he could write a check for $90k haha. Presumably it would be good.

I think the key is to sell to people you know or people who have good references. :)
Last St Paddy's, I made about $2,500 from attedees. I loosened peoples wallets with a combination of alcohol and low pricing.

It only took about $1,800.00 in alcohol though the tab was much smaller than last year, no Oldskool you know...

It sucks dealing with people. If I had to do business dealings with myself, I'd probably hate it, and I'm not even a terrible guy to do business with.

I disagree, I have had fun dealing with you. Interested in a good running m30b35 for your 535is?

You and everybody else who parts out cars are way more patient than I am. You could give Buddha himself a run for his money.

Also, I need to figure out what to do with the blown brake hard line before I do anything engine related. I'm thinking it's easier to remove the ABS than to try to bend the line behind the engine. Maybe I can pay a shop for it to not be my problem anymore.

Potential buyer offered his 2006 Saab Aero Vert with 46k miles as straight trade. Fair enough but not very useful here in WI.
