Seat upholstery restoration recommendation

Post by Adam W in MN »

I wanted to get the word out about a great experience I've had with restoring my E12 M535i seats (rear cushion and backrest and both front Recaros). Too often the knowledge of where the good shops are is in conversations off the message board, or there are threads about crappy work and businesses to avoid. I'm pleased to be able to share a great experience.

Mark's Auto Upholstery here in the St Paul area, the owner's name is Denny. I'm not sure why it's called Mark's, but Denny is the one-man show there. Out of a very small garage with a strange easement (shares property with a little house next door) you wouldn't think such great attention to detail and thoroughness could exist. It's a pretty industrial, blue collar area.

I sourced all the BMW cloth myself and the vinyl from World Upholstery. Price for Denny's work was $1500 for the front seats and $1k for the rear seatback and cushion. Add on $1k in materials and that gives you an idea of what the outlay is to get this done.

I think Denny is more experienced with American hot rods and boats, but he said he had done some work on Mercedes at some point. He definitely had the awareness and attention to the stitching creases and subtle details needed in the cloth on these seats, even pointing out some things I hadn't noticed. For what it's worth since they're cell phone camera pictures, Chris Kohler said that they looked like high quality work. Now that Denny can claim to have older BMW upholstery experience, maybe he'll get some new business out of me posting this thread.

One more note. Denny was very clear on the work he had ahead of me, when he would start on my project, and when he would be finished. Both times (back seats project 1, front seats project 2) he was done before I had availability to come and pick them up by a few days. Great guy, keeps his promises.

good to have recommendations and some idea of pricing. Maybe we should have a section in FAQ for this sort of thing since this post will be history in a month or two.

Those came out much nicer than mine for half the price.

How do they compare to Devinders M5 from Jims? I guess they aren't highly regarded, but my jaw dropped when I saw it. Good, better, best? OK, not OK?
