My new JCWhitney (2RTA) keyless remote is different!

Post by knunger »

It has a 10 wire connector instead of those described in previous (I did my due diligence searches!) threads.

Has anyone installed one of these?

I am an electrical novice and need instructions similiar to those I found in my searches for the previous model which were crystal clear and un-ambiguous.

Can I simply 'follow the colors' and be OK?

TIA

It's the same. Use the wire colors described in the how-to, test it out, and cut off the rest. You don't need them.

FYI- I had the same situation recently.
Could not get mine to work.
I followed the same diagram that is available here on myE28.
I sent my unit back as I think it was defective.
Haven't gotten the new one yet.

What does the new remote look like? Is it an improvement over the old one? Smaller maybe?

It's the same size just has two more wires as I remember.

I bought a couple of these a few weeks ago when they were on sale to put in the e30 and M5. I just finished installing the M5 unit with no problems.
I already had one in the 533 so I just duplicated the wiring.

You didn’t mention where you were trying to install yours but I used the trunk just to the left (driver’s side) of the latch.

I only used 5 of the 10 wires and this is how it went on mine:

White, fused wire to brown wire on left tail light plug

Red , fused wire to positive wire for trunk light (you need to extend the 2RTA wire a little to reach)

Brown unused

Black to brown wire on left tail light plug

Orange unused

Grey unused

Green to the yellow/black wire in the smaller of the 2 bundles that run along the bottom rear of the trunk.

Blue unused

Purple unused

Yellow to the green/black wire in the smaller of the 2 bundles that run along the bottom rear of the trunk

Thank You Charles Gray!!!

With your excellent description I installed my remote in 25 minutes.

(The only difference: I ran the red wire across tha back of the trunk to the red antenna wire).

Thanks again!

I'd test that if I were you- the voltage hiccup when the power antenna activates might confuse the keyless controller.

Did you connect the ground somewhere? I just read the instructions I found without think about it and forgot to put the ground anywhere, once I connected it worked fine.

Black to brown wire on left tail light plug
I assume thats the ground Ety

Does anyone know if there is a FAQ for an install like this? Seems like it would be handy for others who dont stumble on this thread

Yes, brown is the ground.
Make sure it is making contact.
A better pu for +12v is the trunk light.
It's always got voltage.
On the drivers side above the wheel hump.
