Only diff I've had fail was on a 1 ton truck. It was screaming like a banshie for weeks before it finally locked up. Bad pinon bearing I believe.

They rumble, after awhile,it changes a howl. Death throes are a scream.tapering off to a screech as the bearings seize

Heard a sound like the tailpipe was dragging on the ground.

Any chance you got something stuck inbetween the backing plate and the rotor? I had that happen one time on the front and it was definitely an odd one. Just a twig but drove it 40 miles that way and it didn't stop.

Yesterday I swapped in a "thought" good s3.73. 
After hearing some strange sounds last night on the test drive to dinner w/ the wifey,
today I took the car up to a large parking and did a couple of full lock turns, in both directions.
The results were a scraping/grinding sound, so guessing the ls is giving up the ghost.
Re-swap time. Later...
