e38 16x8 Style 5's and e28.
Hi everybody.
I'm sorry if this topic has been covered before, I couldn't find anything with the search so I hope I'm OK
The problem is that I recently purchased Style 5 wheels from a e38 740i (16x8).
Wheels look great but I ran into a problem when putting the center caps on. They fit in the rear but up front the cover over the wheel bearing is too big so the cap can't snap all the way into the wheel!
Is this a known problem? Is there a easy solution?
Thanks in advance, Oskar.

Yes, and yes. You need later-style bearing dust caps with a trough around the edge where the cap prongs sit.R9022 wrote:Is this a known problem? Is there a easy solution?
We need an FAQ to cover this.
OH! That's right, we have one.

Next we'll need an FAQ just to deal with that damn 16x8 ET23 style 5!

Does anyone know what size spacers are required to fit 225/50/16 on these wheels?

None. I have 16x8 et 23 Borbet wheels on mine with 225/50/16 Continentals and there were no mounting issues, and I don't see why there would be. 225 tires are literally for 8 inch wheels. You could stretch 205s on there if you're lowered any though. My car is stock ride height.kickassiguana wrote:Does anyone know what size spacers are required to fit 225/50/16 on these wheels?

Ditto. I have E38 style 5s and those tires on a stock height ETA and they fit fine. Well, aside from being too much wheel for that car... See my sig for a pic.

Rears will always fit fine with both 205 & 225 tires.
In the fronts though it really depends on the tire.
I've tried to mount these with a 225 (sorry cannot remember brand) and it just rubbed the strut.
If you find it rubs, some 3mm spacers will work it out.
I currently run these with 205/55 (yeah looks a little weird but I had the tires) with clearance between the rim bead and the strut tube.

Yeah some brands(i.e. Kumho and some Continental and Nitto models, off the top of my head), and especially run-flats, have a thicker sidewall with a lip that extends out past the wheel(more-so than say, most Michelin or GTRaidal). The tires on my car come maybe within 2-3mm of the tube, which I was afraid would rub due to flex when cornering, but I have never heard anything.ElGuappo wrote:I've tried to mount these with a 225 (sorry cannot remember brand) and it just rubbed the strut.

Yea, they don't flex much when they're not moving.trevmmeister wrote: The tires on my car come maybe within 2-3mm of the tube, which I was afraid would rub due to flex when cornering, but I have never heard anything.

I have 225/50/16 Continentals, and it rubs except for when I'm turning right. I tried 5mm spacers, but then I got vibrations at 45mph.

Were the spacers hubcentric?kickassiguana wrote:I have 225/50/16 Continentals, and it rubs except for when I'm turning right. I tried 5mm spacers, but then I got vibrations at 45mph.

old thread resurrection!
i have these wheels with 225/50 continental dws06. doesn't seem to rub on stock suspension but will lowering it on h&r sports and bilstein sports make it rub?

Re: e38 16x8 Style 5's and e28.
I just let them rub.
Re: e38 16x8 Style 5's and e28.
Mine don't rub, but I used tirerack.com to see the actual tire width and chose one that is 7.8". DZ102. The RE-11 shows 8.3", for example. That 1/2" will rub.
Re: e38 16x8 Style 5's and e28.
if they do rub, they'll only rub for a little...
eventually something will happen and it will stop
