S38B36 from '93 M5 For Sale in Oxnard, CA

Post by TGreene »

UPDATE - April 12th - The engine has sold, thanks everyone for your interest and questions.

UPDATE - Aug 15th - I ran block tester to check the expansion tank for exhaust gases and the tester did not show any contamination. I started to remove the engine from the car today and the coolant came out very clean. I have not drained the oil from the sump yet but when I disconnected the oil cooler lines to take out the radiator support the oil there was clean as well. If anyone is sitting on the fence and might want this engine this week please let me know. Otherwise I plan to put it in another E34 on Wednesday and leave it there for at least six months.

---------------------------------------------

Engine still runs. Before I started parting the car out it ran very well. The car pulled hard to redline. 139,XXX on the engine. It is from a '93 M5.

Compression for all cylinders range consistently between 180-185 PSI. Although the car is up on stands, the engine is still in it and still runs. You can come see it for yourself.

Cooling system held 20PSI compression for 10+ minutes. It took five minutes for cooling system vacuum to fall from 25 to 20PSI. When I got it it had a small amount of gunk in the coolant reservoir. I drove it 3k miles and the car never overheated. Flushed the coolant and it did not come back. $4,200 complete with accessories, harness, DME with Dinan chip, VAC ignition leads, S50 chain tensioner, and a handful of preventative maintenance parts installed on it.

The engine still runs, so this thing is ready to be inspected in person, removed and sold.

If you are not local, I can take videos and have it dropped onto a pallet.

Yes, the wheels are for sale. They were professionally painted black by Ye Olde Wheel Shoppe in MD two years ago. While my friend was driving the rear wheel feel off at 30-40MPH and the disc gouged the inner barrel. You can see pictures in the album. I am asking $750 for the set of four, and I have another spare naked M-System that I could also sell if you wanted a set of five. I also have a set of Throwing Star covers for sale for $380, or I could combine them with the four black M-Systems for $1,000. All of the M-Systems are 17x8 ET 20 and forged, not cast.

When you say gunk, do you mean oil in coolant? What does the oil look?

Here is a picture of the engine bay from the day that I brought the car home. You can see what I mean when you look at the coolant reservoir. There was some kind of residue on the reservoir itself. It was not present in the coolant, though. Maybe it was evidence of a previous head gasket leak or some kind of additive that the one of the previous owners (not my friend who owned the car before me) had thrown in there? I never found out, and I did not even realize it was there until I had driven the car from Virginia to California with no issues. I was concerned but I replaced the coolant and ran the tests and it performs healthily. Oil looks fine. No milkshake under the cap. Although the car is up on stands and the transmission is out, the engine still runs and can be tested any way you want as long as it happens the first week of August. After that, it will be yanked and put in storage.

:bawl: This engine appeared too late to save me from a rebuild, but I can assure everyone that this a good bit cheaper.

I'm very interested in this engine. I have an M5 in mind that needs an engine and this could fit right in. Would you be able to help drop this engine in another car by any chance? PM for more info.

Thanks.

If uncracked, I would very much like to have the black plastic cover near the firewall on the passenger side of the engine bay - the compression gauge is resting on it in photo #6. Please let me know if it is available and, if so, price/shipped to 31069.

Thanks,
Mike Gray

Are you unable to find it new from the dealer? Looks like it is very cheap but maybe NLA new. I might have the part lying around but I won't be back home for a month. It might be easier finding it from another E34 being parted out on one of the forums.

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, this part is NLA. So far, I've been unable to locate a good used piece from anyone parting an e34 M5. I'm certainly willing to wait until you can check on this part for me and appreciate the help.

I will be back with the cars at the end of March, but after some quick searching it looks like a piece that is common to E34 engine bays, at least with the I6 engines. Might come off of E32s as well.

If I don't respond by early April and you are still set on finding one from a M5, send me a message as I might forget to check.

I'm circling back with you regarding the black plastic cover mentioned in our posts above. I've been unable to locate one and, at this point, you are my best hope. Please check on this when you have a chance. Many thanks! Courtesy bump in the process.
