Barn Find 1986 Hartge H5SP

Post by sir_gary »

Well today I added my 5th BMW to my little collection. Is a 1986 Diamond Schwartz Metallic Black Hartge H5SP that's been sitting in a garage for over 12 years. It's only got 87,000 miles. The engine is out because it threw a main bearing. Needs a new cam but that's all, I've got everything else. 2 sets of Hartge wheels, nice interior,
and oh yes,
it'a an extended range BMW. It holds 26 gallons of fuel. 16 in the main tank and 10 in a second tank mounted behind the rear seat. I've hear even heard of that until today!

See there ARE real pictures :-P but you missed Santa and the Prefect Woman.....

Does anyone know where I can get an antenna? I've heard that some E30 M3's had this antenna..

yes and he lives down the road from me. I guess when my H5S, years ago walked by his M6 at 143 on his GPS he knew he had to get something quicker. Gary and I go way back, I scorched a crank one time during an oil pump failure trying to keep up with him..
Big congrats Gary, thats a rare car with a good pedigree! Gary is a hot foot and a past SCCA champ back in the day. The car could not go to someone more deserving. He will drive the snot out of it!  :)

Pics please! I need to find Scott Epstein's email to send him this link in case he knew the car from Performance Plus in the 80's.

we're in eyecandy and there are no pics so this did not happen until there is photographic evidence.

Nice addition to the fleet. What Hartge parts are glued on to this one?

Oh Blue Shadow, its the real deal. It is the one and only. You know, single cam, M88 throttle bodies, manuel sport seats, Gary has already spoken to the original owner. Its the shinizzle!!! :D Ofcourse I havent seen it but ive heard about it for years. So maybe it is just a dream. Haygood had it for a while and then it went to Carl... Its probably true because one time I was at carls house and he had all these birds I mean tons of birds. I ask what the hell. He said he was keeping them for a good friend.. I put two and two together and said its not steve haygood.haha

So this is an H5SP Sport with the ITBs? From that old thread you bumped Adrian the car sounded like a goner but Gary's pics don't look so bad and make me wonder. Not that it won't need plenty of work, though. Are all the parts there, as the word seemed to have been that the unique engine stuff was long lost.

Guess I'll need to turbo the 535is so I can keep up, if I ever get to another old BMW event again. Had fun with the roadtrips/caravans ages ago. Wonder where those 8-10 years went...

Just have faith, its the real deal. The one and only. Not even the pics of the only SP in germany, the zinno car, seem to be an SP. This is the car! Close your eyes and concentrate you can make it happen!!

I havent been here in a very, very, very long time. I screwed up a trade with Minotaur and never got my hands on an e28, so I left in shame lol

My father called Gary the second I forwarded his email and has confirmed it is, in fact, the Hartge H5SP Sport of long ago. Sounds like it is very good hands according to him. So happy to hear this beast will be restored!

What a score! I thought this car was a goner! Great to see it's going to be resurrected from the clutches of doom and gloom. Oh I'd sure like to know what it cost in it's current state. Purely from another Hartge owner's informational perspective, you see. I know you won't answer that, but don't.

Glenn, that was relatively so long ago, I almost forgot all about it. RonP bought that H car and took it to a whole new level. Yeah, you might have missed out, but it was just a car. Besides, I got cash, not a car in trade! Haha!

Can't wait to see the build thread on this one! Niceness....

I used to own this car from 1996-2000. Bought it from a friend who bought it from Scott Epstein at performance Plus.
This was the coolest car ever however it was not congruent with a young family and wife who hated the neck jarring acceleration and tight ride. It had things that were very unique including German language overhead sensor panel
. Larger rear tires. Headlights that you could lower up and down- got disabled. No Cat. Never pass a DMV test but somehow it happened . Thanks to a creative wire twister old school mechanic.
All windows were heavy black tint. Was the OG south Florida drug dealer bling looking car when I first got it. Car was sold to a guy from upper west side NY city. When I asked him where was he going to park it. He said the street. I said it will stolen in a week . I was wrong by two weeks. He gets a call from a parking garage months later when they found his business card. Idiot thief wanted the $1100 Nakamichi tape deck(problematic). My friend put 5G in 87 in the sound system which I blew up to confetti one day playing Beadtie Boys. Glad to see it will live again. One of the coolest cars ever.

It only matters with what chassis the car currently identifies, not how it was born.
