Hi all, thought I'd share this little story with you.

******* NO PEAKING!!!! Read the story first!********

I have been looking for a project lately. I was sitting with some friends at work talking 'car talk' (is there any other kind of talk??), anyway, a guy comes up and starts telling us about fishing... I think, 'come on fella, we are talkin' cars here!!', but I don't say anything. He tells us about going to this small creek to get bait (zzzzzz.....), and that he has to cross the elderly ladies farm to get there. He then says that next to the barn is sitting an old GTO!!! Wow, now the fishing story is get'n good! I say oh yeah, what is it like, what shape is it in??? What is she going to do with it.. Oh yeah what color is it??(cross's fingers hoping for orange!).

He says that he thinks it must have been her late husbands, and that he doubts that she will do anything with it. He thinks the car is ok, he only saw it from a distance. I get really excited (only on the inside of course!), and ask him if we can go look at it. He says sure, and that she may just GIVE the car to me!!! Woohooo...

So.. our first day off, I call him to meet up and go look at this car, it's in B.F.E. (the middle of nowhere on a farm). We head out there, I am all giddy with hopes of a sweet and really rare these days 'barn-find' car. We get to the farm, he says we should go talk to her before we go back to the barn.. "Sure, whatever gets me to the car!". We go talk to her and he asks.. "Hi Mrs. So & so, do you mind if we go back and look at the car by the barn?". She replies "What car??". At this point I'm really really really excited!! (has it been that long since she has been out there.. seems like a freeby "let me get this outa here for you'' deal!!). "Oh that car... that is not my car, it's (Bob) the farmhands car." At this point the giddiness goes away, and fast!. "He is down there, you can go talk to him about it." So, we go down there just in time, as he is allready driving down the path to leave. We stop him and inquire about the car. "Oh yeah, I have had that since 1971." "What do you plan on doing with it? I would be interested in it, if you want to get rid of it." He says.. "Well, I haven't really gotten that far yet.. I don't know what I'm gonna do with it." Ok, so he has had this car since '71 and he hasn't ''gotten that far"???? Well, needless to say, I go look at it anyway.. WOW, what a poooooor car. I felt so bad for the poor thing. Here it sits within view of it's owner for over 30 years, and it is rotting away. The 'farm-hand' doesn't make enough in a year to begin to touch the resto that that poor car needs!

Below are the pics.. I'd just like to add this: If you own an old car, one that is just sitting, rotting away, PLEASE get rid of it! Let someone else have a shot at it... It is such a shame to see a piece of automotive history just rust away into the earth because you havn't ''Gotten that far yet".

Hey Fred,
Now that's just painful...no further photos required. I think the cow, rusty GTO, lean-to farm structures, and weeds
growing around and through the GTO hulk sum it up pretty well. Thanks for sharing...
Best,
Tim

Quite a lot of shiny trim parts on that car going to waste, nice grill sections for a 68, rocker panels sticking out of the front...

Endura nose is trashed, rear bumper might be ok.

Parts is Parts!!

I hang out on a Pontiac web board fairly often, and about once a week someone posts a picture of a similar car. Sitting out in the weeds behind some barn, owned by someone who's either "gonna fix it up someday" or thinks it's worth $20k as is. The price of GTOs has been going nuts the last couple years, I keep thinking I'd like to find a nice restorable project myself but there just isn't much left, particularly for a price I'd want to pay.
