1939 bmw 326. Valuation Help

Post by symmat001 »

Hi Guys

Seeing that you guys are the only connection I have to the overseas BMW community, I would like to request your help.

I am trying to ascertain a value for this particular classic, believed to be the only one in Africa, no knowledge about it here, and there aren't any recent sales on the net that i have found.

Is anyone on the forum an expert with classics? Would the North American market be keen on something like this? who can I contact with valuation help.

Brief history, the car is a 1939, pre war BMW 326.

It has original interior and paint, never been resprayed. We have owned it for over 20 years. My Father and Grandfather bought it when the Barlows Motor Museum closed down here in South Africa, it was in their collection. It is not licensed currently but has papers and is registered in South Africa. Car has been in storage for 5 years. It drove into storage. Hasnt been started since.

You can reply here or PM me and i will procide you with an e-mail address.

Um, I'll give you $5,000 US for it. Do you suppose that'll cover shipping to the States too, or should I kick in an extra couple hundred?

;)

Seriously, that is something really cool and special. No idea on value, but if it were in my family, things would have to be pretty dire before it would get sold. Please tell me you're only asking the question to get an idea of its value for insuring it...

I think you'd be better off contacting a car auction house for an appraisal or at least they can give you some names and numbers. A buyer is going to want real estimates, not those given by people from a forum.

Not that it's comparable, a few months back I found a shell of a 1935 319 or at least that's what the seller thought it was. He wanted $40,000 and that was just the shell. I don't know if his price was accurate for the marketplace but the point is that you're in substantial money territory. Pay someone for an appraisal.

If anyone by the name of Mike Burroughs tries to buy it, run away, run away fast.

Hey man, thanks for your input, i'm more posting it here to see who I should contact, and not ascertain a value from the forum. Like I said i'm in South Africa and i've tried through channels we have in place here and I have had no luck.

So if anyone knows a classic specialist in NA or europe that would be able to help us please could you get in touch. I haven't the first clue on where to start.

I don't know if this helps but here's what I found doing a quick search. Bonhams, RM etc. seems like the people to get in touch with.

I'd contact the BMWCCA directly. I'm not sure who exactly you'd want to talk to, but they'd have a name somewhere. They might direct you to somebody in Germany. It's not too often somebody asks about pre-war cars.

A fixed top 326 sedan will never bring the kind of money a 328 or a drophead 326 will, but it is definitely worth some coin.

Thank you. Have contacted the seller of that 326 convertible. Will look into the others.

I figured as much. Only recent sales on those cars however. And not the 326.

I think is the de facto BMW enthusiast community in the US for pre-war Bimmers.

I'd suggest calling BMW Excluservice Auto Repairs in Rockville, MD - (301)231-5400. Ask if they can put you in touch with Lothar Schuettler, the restorer/owner of several vintage BMWs.

I didn't think Lothar was doing any work on them any more, but I know he knows his old BMWs.

RealOEM shows parts still available for it.
Wiring set for example. Looks like people did stuff for themselves back then.

And you can still get a transmission.

I wonder if it's like fuel line and you only get 1 meter lengths of it.

Seriously though, there appears to be more available than I would have expected from an 80 year old car.

Hi Guys!

Should have updated this. Thank you for reaching out "arrgh".

The car was sold to the CEO of BMW South Africa in 2015 who shipped it to BMW classic in Germany as i understand.

Sad to see her go and leave Africa, but happy its in the right hands.
