Posting problem?

Post by danc »

Anybody else have a problem like this?
I just put up another post which was a little wordy, so I typed it in Word first, figuring I would fix my many typos and check my grammar  before posting, then went to paste the text into the message body. It seemed to paste alright, but when I hit Preview, the preview would be blank, and the text I pasted into the message body was gone. This happened a few different times. I even put the text into Notepad first, then copied it from there, thinking maybe the Word formatting was causing a wrinkle, but that didn't work either. I ended up having to type the damn thing all over again.
Aarrgh! :x

Something tells me you work with the government. Try it again, but with a bigger budget this time.

Something tells me you're wrong.
My most important budget is my time, which it seems like I'm wasting once again...

What was the very first part of the body of the post? Was it a link or an image of some kind by any chance?

That's weird. I've seen some peoples posts come up totally blank before, but haven't experienced anything like that myself and I've put up some looooong posts that I copied and pasted from Word.

No, text only.
I also tried to type a little text into the body, such as "xxx", press enter, then paste after that. Same result. I tried pasting just a few words, all sorts of things. It seems that pasting just wouldn't work.
My fingers are getting tired!

PS - I just tried it again, quoting Jeremy to start the post, paste some text, and it happened again.

For this post you're reading now, I had copied the message body where I quoted Jeremy, pasted it in AFTER the 1st failure, and now it worked.
FWIW, I've also had some issues lately with searching, where I would get no results one time, try the exact same search again, and then get results.
Database maintenance time, maybe?

Those sound like unrelated issues, but I can totally understand how they would both be frustrating. FWIW, I typed this message totally in Word, then copy and pasted it over, hit Preview, then Submit. It seems to work for me as well as most other people on the forum (as you're the first I've heard of experiencing this problem), so that tends to make me think the issue isn't with the forum software itself but something specific to your setup.

What operating system, internet browser, and browser extensions are you currently running? Have you tried this using a different browser by any chance?

Same browser, IE, but different computers. Last night was my home computer, this morning work computer, both Windows 7 Pro. Not certain of IE version at work but home version is IE10.
Haven't tried another browser. Maybe I'll try Chrome next, and Firefox. Never had this problem before, though.
I guess we'll see what happens in the future. Hopefully just a glitch, but I'll try to pay attention to the details you mentioned going forward.

Another question... why is the post marked Moved:?
I originally posted it in General Conversation, and now it's in "Comments".
What's up with that?
Did you do that, Jeremy?
I guess I should have posted in "Comments" in the first place. Geez, the man is watching, isn't he?

I did move the thread here, this is the more appropriate place for this sort of discussion. ;)

Please try a different browser and report back. It's a very strange issue that I can't replicate on my computer, even when using Internet Explorer to post.

I sent you a pm about this quite some time ago. This morning anything from outside of this site I attempt to cut and paste in, results in blank preview and unable to post.
Using the 'alt' command to create symbols now results as hitting the 'back' button, specifically "alt+248".
It is worse then when I first mentioned it to you.

Win7, IE11

I've had that and other strange stuff happen on the computer at work. They've got it screwed down so tight, supposedly for security, it barely works. I don't know if it's in IE settings or Windows settings, but strange stuff happens that never happens on any of my personal computers, regardless of what browser I'm using.
