What did you use for a coupling?
Re: "Vlad": The Zinno '87 535is (now with a B35)
I'm surprised your undercarriage isn't spotless. Get under there with some gasoline and a tooth brush for crying out loud. The underside of my parts car is cleanerOcCoupe wrote:cek wrote: [/url]

I has a plan for addressing this. I always has a plan.
I have a new rear sub-frame I'm going to modify for adjustable camber. Then powder coat. When I do the swap the rear area will be cleaned.
However, you should know that even the exterior is embarrassingly dirty right now; this is my daily driver after all.

Was it you that texted me the other day?
Re: "Vlad": The Zinno '87 535is (now with a B35)
No. I thought you blocked my number anyway when you got that restraining order against me.

Well, someone named Charlie texted me about something e28 related and never got back to me.

Only the best for Vlad.
Changed the oil today. I'll be posting some pics & videos of the inside of the engine over on my M30B35 thread in a few minutes...

You paid 2-3 times more for your Mahle OX-41 because it had a Roundel on it? Interesting...cek wrote:Only the best for Vlad.

Vlad only possesses the highest quality oil leaks.

When it rains it pours.
Last time I drove him was Monday night and it was raining big time and I had the classic 'speedometer & obc die" issue. I get this when it's wet out and usually finagling Fuse 6(I or is it 12? I don't remember) fixes it (I really need to put a rubber grommet around that fuse) or it just fixes itself. It hasn't been a problem for months.
Anyway it was running fine when I parked it.
Went to start Vlad today and he'd crank but not start.
I don't have a ton of experience diagnosing no-start situations so while I understand the principles of testing for spark v fuel, I don't really remember the details. This was the lower garage so I didn't have Bentley handy. So I just tried a few obvious things: I jiggled the fuel pump relay. No joy. I jiggled fuse 1. No joy. Then I pulled fuse 1 and looked at it. Looked fine. But it was one of those metal/glass fuses the PO had put in, so I replaced it with a new red torpedo fuse. Started right up.
Hmmm...
Then as I'm driving into work my amp stops working. Head unit is fine. Weird.
When I get to my parking spot I pop the trunk and verify no power LED on on the amp.
I pop the hood an look around. The big plastic fuse holder in for the 8ga power wire for the amp that comes off the battery has failed and its in two pieces. I've got F4 tape in the trunk so I do a quick repair and test.
3 independent electrical failures w/in 20 miles of driving. Gotta love old cars.

I wonder if a bone stock old car would have those same problems? Just an observation, given your comment- I realize that you are all about building a better mousetrap, so aren't one to leave well enough alone.cek wrote:3 independent electrical failures w/in 20 miles of driving. Gotta love old cars.

Re: "Vlad": The Zinno '87 535is (now with a B35)
Those glass fuses they make are awful. The solder heats up enough for the end caps to move and the fuse shrinks.
Re: "Vlad": The Zinno '87 535is (now with a B35)
I hope you baseline your Fusebox. Get quality CERAMIC fuses and never have another issue like that. I haven't had a fuse failure in years when using the right stuff. Our lighting dimmers we use on shows have glass fuses and we have that same problem Kyle describes. Not too often but if we drop a lamp during a show, the fuse for that channel is generally a little shorter than the others.
Re: "Vlad": The Zinno '87 535is (now with a B35)
I know it's silly I haven't base-lined the fuse box yet. I really want to find a solution for positively locking the torpedo fuses in. I still have not found rubber grommets/bands that fit. I keep imagining I'm going to find the perfect sized ABS plastic clip intended for some other purpose that's just the right length that will snap on top of them. I have an active imagination.wkohler wrote:I hope you baseline your Fusebox. Get quality CERAMIC fuses and never have another issue like that. What's the best source for "quality CERAMIC fuses"? I've bought packs here and there and have been mostly disappointed.

Re: "Vlad": The Zinno '87 535is (now with a B35)
Unless the box is melted or someone has bent the contacts, the spring tension is more than enough to hold the fuse in tightly. The o-rings are really unnecessary unless you have other issues. If the contacts have melted, there isn't a whole lot to be done other than try to bend them a little closer together, or replace the box.
