Once I hit about 10 I will make some more
I've received a ton of requests to make gaskets for different models - thank you for the interest. I'd like to seriously look into making some different type seals for these cars. The E28 tail light gasket just happened to be one that was similar in material to what I could get my hands on at the time. The flat foam is available in varying thicknesses and can be cut to any shape. That said, it's isn't a molded gasket. So, for the people asking about the E23 - the answer is I maybe. If I had one in my hands then I could give a better answer, but it appears to be molded which would be a little more involved than the E28 gasket; if you wanted a molded gasket. If anyone has a new one and would like to send it to me, I can look into it and make sure you get it back. It may very well be that the flat material may work in place of the molded gasket, I don't know. The other issue is need, how many people would buy them as there are set up costs for the machine; and I can't afford to have a bunch of gaskets that people won't buy. Someone (cfisher) mentioned other gaskets which I will list below which are NLA so feel free to chime in. I should probably create a separate thread for solicitation of gasket ideas actually...
Other gasket ideas, in addition to the e12, e23, and e24 seals:
- firewall
- pedal boxes
- power booster
- HVAC to firewall
- donut shaped gasket about 2 inches thick about the size of an old Eisenhower dollar coin that seals the water drain on the e28 and e24 HVAC boxes to the transmission tunnel
So to sum it all up. Can it be made - if flat is the easiest - I would need to acquire a sample. Need - how many people would potentially buy it? If we find something that will work and we want to do a limited run, then that's not really a problem, I would just rather have a list of buyers in advance. For any of these, I can send someone a prototype to see if the gaskets work since I only have an E28 and not an E23.
Whew, that was a lot. Sorry for the long diatribe...

I'd like two sets. Thanks.
Re: SALE: TAIL LIGHT HOUSING GASKETS $45/PAIR (SHIPPED)
I'll take 1 set. I have new BMW seals on one car and I'll try these on the other to compare.

1st 5er, any feedback on the package coming without the cardboard this time? Did the mailer seem to do okay by itself? Thanks, Dave1st 5er wrote:Got home from Vintage to a nice surprise.

I didn't open it.
I laid it on the table with the other too.
It looked no different from them, so I'm sure we're good.
Thanks for the reliable transactions.

Re: FS: TAIL LIGHT HOUSING GASKETS $50/PAIR
Help me out- that looks like the right tail light, with all that corrosion in your brake light sector... clearly that was a motivating factor in recreating these replacement gaskets, am I correct? That design makes the brake light the weak link in the lights; sorry Hella, but you could have done better!june82000 wrote:
My guess - that side does not have a bright or reliable brake light.
Contact me, I can help if you still need it.
By the way, awesome looking material! Seems obvious it will do the job ... better than the stock gasket by far!
Mo Brighta, Mo Betta, as I always say!

Re: FS: TAIL LIGHT HOUSING GASKETS $50/PAIR
Actually, the water leaking into my trunk was the real motivation. I ordered a set of BMW gaskets, but I found them to be not the best material - especially considering what they cost. The tail lights actually work fine, I was more concerned with water getting in the trunk and rusting out the body from the inside. Thank you for the comments!MisterFixit wrote:Help me out- that looks like the right tail light, with all that corrosion in your brake light sector... clearly that was a motivating factor in recreating these replacement gaskets, am I correct? Received mine and had a new BMW gasket to compare. These are exactly the same size and do not have a seam. Definitely appear more robust. Nothing like a 2 for 1 on a better product.
You have a winner on your hands!

Re: FS: TAIL LIGHT HOUSING GASKETS $50/PAIR
If my understanding is correct, you're referring to the rubber pieces that install directly underneath the left and right hood vent at the top of the hood just next to the windshield. If so, these would be a great buy for anyone interested in good engine bay cleanliness / restoration. I've seen tons of pics of cars (as most probably have or at least experienced with their own car) where these rubber vents seals are completely FUBAR. Hell, I'd buy a pair and I don't even own the car.june82000 wrote:.....If I can gain enough interest and its worth the effort I might do a run on the vent seals. I don't think I'd be able to offer them at a price of $5 however; the dealer prices them at that point but they are NLA. I'll try to check into it this week.
It's really too bad that BMW is letting parts like this go the way of extinction.....
Re: SALE: TAIL LIGHT HOUSING GASKETS $45/PAIR (SHIPPED)
Pretty sure he means the rear vent seals. I was going to suggest that, but didn't knkw if they are NLA. I'd buy them.
Re: SALE: TAIL LIGHT HOUSING GASKETS $45/PAIR (SHIPPED)
Yes, I was talking about the c-pillar vent seals. I actually did pay to have those seals set up in the machine that cuts them, had a set made and wasn't all that happy with them. The material thicknesses available aren't what is really needed; one was too thin and the other too thick as compared to the OEM seal. The OEM sea is NLA but a handful are still available from various dealerships. I mean, there might be a dozen or two left in the US and that's it. The seal itself doesn't seem to serve much of a purpose from what I can tell. The readily available grommets seem to be more of a factor in keeping the water from making its way into the car than the actual seal itself.dsmith wrote:Pretty sure he means the rear vent seals. Wanted to provide some feedback for these seals. I have had them in since they were introduced and i have had no leaks. They are working perfectly!
Re: SALE: TAIL LIGHT HOUSING GASKETS $45/PAIR (SHIPPED)
Any chance you have or could do the same gaskets for the e24 chassis?
Thanks,
Eric
