PRIORITY BOX EXCHANGE -- 2016 SANTA EDITION

Post by davintosh »

Again, by popular demand, the Priority Box Exchange is back for 2016. And yes, the Santa Edition again, because everybody loves getting somebody else's old stuff for Christmas, especially if that stuff is somehow (even remotely) related to our favorite ~30 year old automobile! And Santa is an equal-opportunity elf; he don't care who you are, if you have the capacity to give and post on this site, you can play!

Short version, for those who know what the PBE (Priority Box Exchange) is, here are the pertinent details:
You need to:
  1. sign up in this thread,
  2. send a PM to me, davintosh, with your mailing address, whether X-rated content ok or not, and whether you're willing to spend the $$ to send a box overseas,
  3. obtain a US Postal Service Medium Priority Mail box, pack it, and send it off by December 17,
  4. post a comment in this thread that your box is on its way,
  5. wait until December 25 to open your box,
  6. post another comment in this thread showing off what you got, and thanking the guy who sent it.
Schedule...
  • November 28 -- Registration Opens
  • December 9 -- Registration Closes
  • December 17 -- Deadline For Mailing Boxes
  • December 25 -- Open Your Box!
Long version, for those who are new to the game and are asking, "What is a Priority Box Exchange?"
Well, here's an example from 2011, and here's another from 2012, and another from 2013,, and another from 2014, here is last year's. In a nutshell, if you're like most of us you've no doubt collected stuff around the house & garage that you think, "this is pretty cool, but I don't know if I'll never use it," and about which your wife/SO asks you, "What is that, and why do you keep it?" Consider this your opportunity to send that cool stuff on to a deserving someone else (provided that stuff will fit into a US Postal Service Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box, so no transmissions, engine blocks, valve heads, wheels, etc...)

Since this is another Santa Edition exchange, when you receive your package, DON'T OPEN IT RIGHT AWAY! KEEP IT SEALED UNTIL DECEMBER 25! Yeah, I know there are plenty of entries on Santa's Naughty List around here, but let's try to be good little boys (girls are welcome to play too!) and save the opening until Christmas, OK? Once you open it, be sure to post a comment to tell us what you got; photos speak volumes!

Instructions:
  1. First: Post a reply in this thread stating your willingness to be part of the exchange.
By taking part in the exchange, you agree to fulfill your obligations outlined in the paragraphs below.
All of them. Failure to do any of them will not go well for you.
  2. Second: send me a PM with your mailing address info, your preferences regarding X-rated content, and whether you're okay with shipping a box overseas. After registration closes on December 9, I'll shake things up & send you the mailing address of another member who is playing along. I will also update this post with a list of the names of the players as they come in.

WARNING: Again, if you sign up and don't send off a box, you will be outed and publicly shamed! People have been stiffed in past exchanges, and we don't want that happening; broken hearts on Christmas Day make Santa sad, so deadbeats need not apply.
  3. Third: Go to your local post office and pick up a Medium Flat Rate Box (Size: 13 5/8" x 11 7/8" x 3 3/8" or 11" x 8 1/2" x 5 1/2"; if you're the visual type, here's the link to what you need.). The cost to ship the MFRB domestically is $13.45 (a little higher than last year.) Shipping outside the US is a bit higher -- International Rate: $45.95 to Mexico/Canada; $75.95 to Australia, etc... It gets a little pricey to send internationally (FedEx or UPS both have similarly-sized boxes, and they may be less money sending internationally) so we'll play it by ear if anybody from outside the borders of the US signs up. Military members serving overseas have APO/FPO addresses, and Priority Mail gets the same rate to those addresses (but there are a few additional stipulations to what can be in the boxes, and word has it that the contents are checked for compliance.)
  4. Fourth: Fill your box with some of the super-awesomely cool (or geeky or weird or strange) stuff lying around the house or garage that you no longer need. Try to make it something you would want to receive, ie: no junk. Think Golden Rule.
    Some ideas for inspiration:
    • Magazines
    • Tools
    • Stickers
    • Posters
    • Books
    • Old jewelry, key fobs, promotional items...
    • Car/BMW themed items
    • Toys
... the list could go on and on, but you get the idea.
  5. Fifth: Ship the box. You have until December 17 to pack and ship your box to the person assigned to you. The Priority Mail boxes typically take two days to make it to their destination, but it doesn't hurt to give it some extra time. If anything comes up that prevents you from getting it mailed by then, let me know; we don't want anybody to get stiffed and be sad on Christmas Day.
  6. Sixth: Come back to this thread and post that your box is on its way.
  7. Seventh: Wait... For your box of goodies to arrive. When it does, come back to this thread and post that your box has arrived.
  8. Eighth: Wait... Until December 25 to open it. It'll be just like Christmas! (oh, wait...) I suppose Christmas Eve would work too, but Christmas Morning is just so tradition, and so character-building!
Also, if the box contains certain, um... items that would be better unveiled out of sight from spousal units or juvenile offspring, mark the box as PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL to keep things discrete. Nobody needs that kind of surprise.
  9. Ninth: Come back to this thread and post a description of what was sent to you. And a thank you would be nice. Also nice would be photographic evidence, because...
    :pics!:
Remember, if you're going to play, you need to follow through, all the way. And that includes posting something about what you got, bonus points for photographic evidence. We had a few individuals who didn't do that last year, and that really detracted from what has become a fun tradition. So do us all a favor, and finish what you start! Those who didn't follow through last year (I have a list) won't be playing this year. And if you don't want to play, for whatever reason, we really don't want to hear about why in this thread.

Ok then... Let's do this. Who's in?

Count me in. I work in a old bmw shop and the owners are liquidating the old stuff for some absurd reason. That stuff is worth it's weight in bronze. I can easily pull together a sweet medium box full of BMW paraphernalia. (spell check fixed that word for me, what happened to the old "sound it out"?).

'Tis the season, and a good way to unload all those Barry Manilow duplicates that I've acquired over the years. I'll play.

Bumpity. One more day for the procrastinators to sign up! Let's set the deadline at midnight tomorrow night (midnight where ever you are.) After that I'll be matching up names and emailing names & address info to all the players.

And for those of you who are playing, have you got your boxes packed up yet?

How about now?
