zypressengrün 745i rebirth
I suppose I should start an official build thread, pics etc etc... on an otherwise boring green car. Perhaps slightly more enticing than reading the new york times whilst taking a caca. You be the judge. At least the former can double as northern tissue should you run out. More to come as/when/if motivation moves me. Additionally props will be given to those involved along the way as well. This grün pain in my ass, grün thorn in my side, grün callous on my big toe is still evolving/growing. Somehow thus far it has escaped gasoline/matches on several occasions as the 'build team' can recall. Spoken occasions were accompanied by customary 'custom' expletives to compliment said occasions. What's wine without cheese or peanut butter no jelly? Ya dig?
PS. dial up folks go home as I wont be resizing pics.
Few details below. These are temporary & subject to massive changes once my pocketbook allows.

Re: zypressengrün 745i & som
Steve (aka TurboE28) the better 1/2 of the build team found this basketcase up north & assisted in securing/sealing the deal. His buddy cockdiesel did the muscle work. A quad cab extended bed lifted diesel that thinks of fuel like Kool Aid. At least it had ac. We left LA on a Friday at 4pm (tad later than expected due to beer/keys/communication) & made the trek to Oakland I think. Arrived around 11pm. Took a look. Yep 'we'll' take it. Loaded it up & headed back home. 3 hours into the trip we stopped to assist two young ladies apx 3am. They dozed off & ended in a ditch. Both were fine with no sign of missing appendages. But... Someone was missing. Joey. Joey the cat. Passenger was frantically running thru the ditch with several near misses of oncoming traffic yelling for Joey. Scary & comical at the same time. Stayed there almost an hour waiting for CHP to show up, then we booked it. Pretty pathetic no other cars stopped to see if anyone was hurt. I guess the scene of dust, a smoking car, & headlights faced the wrong direction in a ditch is common sight... We arrive in LA just past dawn & drop the car off, then the trailer. Story over? Naw, we made a B-line for Paddys day in San Diego on zero sleep. Good times!

Stock boost level still? Does the early E23 still use a sideloader? What diff-- 2.93?

Nope. With all the work/cash/frustration shelled out building this PITA ride it'd be a shame.tschultz wrote:Stock boost level still?
This one has a normal big case. 3.07 I believe. Open diff. I'd be tempted to step up to a 2.79tschultz wrote: Does the early E23 still use a sideloader? What diff-- 2.93?
The 5 speed in the e23 fun but it'd be insane fast with an auto. Shifting gears is like building up excitement and the going to a commercial break. I copied Todd's setup (TCD) in the 533 and am running 3k stall converter with a 3.73 diff. Match made in heaven or effective way to get locked under the jail. My 533 had maybe 250k on an original unopened motor when initially boosted. It's north of 300k now. Motor is tired & ready to be put out to pasture.tschultz wrote:How does it compare to your 533 turbo?

Gorgeous car! Can't wait to see it up close at TexFest. Vintage is just so big there is never time.

Such a cool looking car. I don’t care for tan interiors but the wheels and exterior paint are really cool. Looking forward to seeing more about it.

Loved seeing this work of art in the flesh last weekend. You should have taken my BBS RSs with you! Let's meet up when I come thru on my way to La Jolla later this year.

I love the color. Nice work LJ.
Re: zypressengrün 745i rebirth
Boring car? Hardly! E23 will have its day. It's built like the six - super tough. Take apart a 6 or a 7 and then take apart a 2004 era BMW. You'll be in for a chuckle! Plastic VS metal and strong plastic and foam and wood that will get old but has a stronger chance of being refinished again and again, almost like a forever car. Or a tool built in the 50's.

Never been a huge fan of tan myself either & considered swapping it to black. It's simpler leaving it asis for now, not to mention I have a laundry list of other things. I don't think I'll tint the windows so it may be smart leaving the interior lighter.Adam W in MN wrote:Such a cool looking car. This one will never be a concourse car, but it will embarrass many a newer thought to be faster car.Spen wrote:Boring car? Hardly! E23 will have its day. It's built like the six - super tough. Re: zypressengrün 745i rebirth
Tad more to the story of how this build came to fruition.
The grün dorn from the factory had a m102 turbo. At some point, all of this was removed. An e32 m30b35 & electronics were swapped in accompanied by an e23 catalytic converter (installed backwards). It passed smog like this somehow. I was there to bear witness... The motor seemed to run good but prior to any attempt to putting this thing on the road, I'd have to deal with the clapped out 3hp22 that was inop. It was clear that someone 'attempted' to work on it previously as indicated by the trans pan sealed with globs of orange RTV. I dropped the pan to change filter/fluid & resealed with the proper gasket. Anyone that knows me also knows I'm fairly handy with the auto trans. After all this, the car actually ran/drove pretty good. I did a basic tune up prior to any highway miles. It cruised pretty strong to SD & LA a few times with beefy b35 pushing a lethargic 3hp.
Late one night after work I hit a 2 lane entrance ramp to merge onto the 405s. Low & behold a lovely prius was on my side attempting to overtake grün. I'm not sure about most of you, but it'll be a cold day in hell before a prius passes me without my consent. 2. This is a direct hit on my manhood which I take seriously. There was zero traffic so I was prepared to chalk this up as my 1st kill. Not much honor in smashing a prius but hey he asked for it right? I begin to accelerate before realizing how tall the gearing is in the 3hp. We need more warp speed Scotty! As the prius nosed past me I went into desperation mode & punched it. *POOF* A speedwalker would've been faster than my warp as I lost all fwd gears. I coasted to the shoulder with tail between legs reflecting on what had just happened... There was nothing I could do but laugh as I already knew the 3hp22 was already suspect. Had the car towed home & there it sat as I contemplated my next move.
They say an idle mind is the devils workshop. Very true statement!
Initially I was going to do a quick trans rebuild but for several months months the car sat. So much for anything quick... If pulling the trans, why not drop in a 4hp? Since I have 2 other m30 auto cars I figured I'd do a 5spd swap. That sounds like fun behind a b35! But I wanted (read needed) a tad more power. After chatting with Geordi and his experiences I was VERY close to pulling trigger on a Miller MAF setup. Hmm, why not drop in a cam while I'm at it? That would be sweet & peppy! Well if you're going to do a cam, why not just consider boosting the b35 since you have several turbo bits & your buddy Steve has necessary missing parts. Yeah I'll go that route. That would be cool but what's a 745i without the original turbo motor? I mean for the cool or mildly original factor you need the oil squirters, oil cooler, knock sensors & it'd be handy to have the oil return in the block in order to avoid drilling holes. My living arrangement puts a damper on things big time. Oh wait but I have a spare m106 I could just drop it in right? Naw. To be safe I should at minimum reseal it. Yes, I'll go that route. That thought lasted all of 30sec before reality kicked in. If you're going to do all this work are you really going to just reseal a motor & drop in without doing a full inspection? Since I'm not 100% moron I passed on that thought. It's always been on my list to build a motor. Assembled with my own hands. Hell others have done it & been successful right? I've done head gaskets, head swaps, installed a TCD kit, built a MegaSquirt & custom harness sooo... Nothing from nothing leaves nothing. I decided to give a go. Here we land with a slightly modified/rebuilt m106 & 5speed swap.
There have been several members that gave input/advice/guidance/inspiration during the build that I owe huge gratitude to!
The list includes but isn't limited to: Jo, Steve aka turboE28, HitmanX aka Eric the red, Mike H, Todd @TCD, trmcatee, Ocoupe, BimmerHeads, Paul L, Ron P, Steve @BluntTech, David aka kojo96, Vern & several others
More pics to entertain soon.

Will stir the pot soon for a meet, stay tuned! e23's featured (for the 2nd time in history) You're more than welcome to show!
Since Spax are NLA, I wanted to roll the dice in trying something a bit risky. I'm running VMaxx springs (made in Netherlands) & Bilstein HD. The struts will get custom valving soon. So far I'm VERY happy with the setup & feel it will be perfectly dialed in when revalving occurs.igotbank wrote:definitely a nice build! what suspension are you running and are you still using g stock exhaust?
As for exhaust, I copied the setup I'm running on my other 745i. Front resonator delete & keeping the big center resonator and rear muffler. LOVE the sound! Zero resonance in the cabin with just a hint of rumble from the back. Even most Grandparents would agree it's pleasant but lets you know something's hidden.

it was intentional, because you need to show in an E23 at TexFest, Hitman.

Re: zypressengrün 745i rebirth
I've been slacking with the picture updates, but will try to whip up a few more this week mostly from the engine build. I'm at roughly 7000 miles since rebuild, zero oil usage or leaks. Blackstone oil samples came back within spec as well. I'd say my first rebuild has been a success.
This weekend I'm plotting to semi-debut the car at SoCal Vintage. Hopefully some of you can attend & we'll chat it up! Car stuff, turbos, franzia, etc!!!

I found myself behind the wheel of zypressengrun at TexFest 2022. Oh my, so much fun. I had ahab in the passenger seat.
It fully affirmed the direction of my build. And luckily I have all the parts, except a low gearing S diff. I got a S3.73 on the shelf which is going to be too much.
Thanks, LJ.

Hello,
My name is Michal, I'm from Poland, and recently I've started to have a problem with the wastegate of my 745i from 1986. I have a question about the spare wastegate valve, which seemed to be a mix of Tial's valve F38 and a lower part (with the spring and housing) from the original BMW's 11651286421. Am I right? How was it prepared? Could you please share some advice?
Tial still has F38 on their website
