Here's the build thread. It just needs to be moved to "Eye Candy" viewtopic.php?f=2&t=159331

I just did two years' worth of catching up. After seeing your work on the wiring harness, I've decided you need to come and help me get my car running again. Please?

Also, where were you when I was looking for calendar fodder a month ago? Or a better question is, why did I not subscribe to this thread a long, long time ago? I've fixed that anyway; the calendar is already done.

Such a cool shot...

Over the last couple weeks I’ve read through your thread, as well as your b35 build thread. Love the detail you put into the car, but especially into the threads. It is truly a resource for the community. Looking forward to your standalone solution!

Tee-hee. Glad I could entertain!

Here's some gratuitous shots of Vlad testing my new 2-post lift at Gruntled HQ.

Nice. Hard to imagine a prettier e28 car. Big fan of the Venetian blue 911, too!

Put the Fikses on Vlad for funzies.

I love these wheels, but hate the undersized/stretched tires.

Only took me like 8 years, but I finally connected the driver's seat heat on the E34 sport seats.

Because there is no readily available on-in-start-or-run power source near the seat, and because I don't want to pull the carpet/kick panel to pull a wire, it is currently always hot. But i wired it with a plug that will make it easy to put an in-line power off delay like this one (ordered):

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HNDOCKK

This is needed because leaving the seat heater on will quickly drain the battery.

I also fixed a slight twist in the seat.

I'll get to the passenger seat in several more years. Maybe.

Charlie, are those M5 or 95 M Sport or "just" e34 sport seats?

Could you educate us as to the stitching differences due to your extensive knowledge of the E34 spot seats? I have an option for a pair of blacks locally from a friend.

They are a bastardized set from 3 different sets of E34 Sport Seats. Not sure what cars they originally came from. Sorry.

The seat back bolsters are ///M stitched.
The seat bottom is not ///M stitched.

Found my thread where I built these: viewtopic.php?t=120566

Looks like I used an ///M stitched bolster only on the driver's left side.

Uh oh...

Image

Both the input and output shaft bearings leak anyway...

Now the list of things I need to do to make this car even more perfect expands:
  • Swap out clearly failing 260/6 and put in either the 265/6 or 260/6 I have laying around. Current vote is the 265/6 but until I verify that the two spares are actually good... I believe it shouldn't be hard to put the 265/6 in and retain my Autosolutions shifter.
  • Reseal the engine (timing chain covers, rear main seal).
  • Check the status of the oil pump (I've long been nervous that I did something wrong rebuilding it).
  • Install the M5 steering box I have lying around
  • Nuke the WAR chip/MAF and replace with something better (I recently ordered one of these for Maytag... if it's any good I'll go that direction on Vlad too: https://www.classicdaily.net/collection ... d-play-ecu)
  • Upgrade sway bars.
  • Replace dogbones. The rest of the suspension looks good still.
  • Nuke PO's lame headlight relays and re-do headlight wiring circuit
I'm going to drop the engine/tranny combo to do all this. This will give me a chance to re-clean the engine bay and fix some of my insulation sins from when I did the swap. Having a 2-post lift and my E28 engine cradle will make this cake.

More research is required for the shifter to go from a 260/6 to a 265/6. The dimensions of the shift linkage are different IIRC.
When I put in a Z3 shifter into the M535i with a 265/6, we had to use the newer shift fork (E30 parts which is 260/6 based architecture). In order to make it fit we had to cut down and re-weld the shift fork to fit the connection points on the 265 and E28 shift console.

It might be totally different with the Autosolutions parts, but careful measurements need to be taken in either event.

What confuses me about this is the 265/6 I have came out of an E28 (85 535i). The only difference should be sheet metal vs aluminum console, right?

Before I misquote things, I need to dive into my photos and confer with Ralph on why we had to do what we did.
I do know that I had to engineer a way out of a box of my own making by electing to stick with BMW parts for a short shift solution (using a Z32.8 shifter) on a 265/6 in an E28. Other products like that from Autosolutions would have been the solution as I think their shifter linkage worked this out (verify).

I have put a 265/6 from '85 e28 into '83 e24 and then into '88 e28. Yes, you need the console but also maybe the matching driveshaft. They are different lengths.

Ahhh. Good info. Good thing I kept the driveshaft from the car the tranny came from.

There are different length sheet metal consoles as well betwix the 260/5, 265/6 for M30 and probably the early 528e too. Perhaps more sheet.

Here's the 260/6 I took out of the Turbo 88 535is I parted.

The input shaft has less wobble than the 265/6.

Perhaps this is what i'll put in.
