Current options for steering box rebuild

Post by mitch5 »

I searched but couldn’t find anything more current than 2 years old and I’m not sure if the old users that sold seals still are. The steering box on my ls swap e28 is spraying fluid out of one of the seals onto my headers so I need to do something.

What are the best options if I want to send the box out for a rebuild? It would be nice to have the box tight again. Anyone have recent feedback for a good source. This seems to be the same forum member jay who now has a website?

Alternatively if I just want to replace the seals what is the best source now?

Jay has rebuilt (resealed actually) an e28 steering gearbox and an e12 steering gearbox for me. Both are currently in service. He's also done several PS pumps, AC compressors and Hydro Boosters

With all due respect to Jay, are they any tighter or do they just not leak?

The e28 box was already in good order but leaked bad so a reseal was my goal. Likewise for the e12 box but as you know they are very different. Internally the e12 box is originally built with 3 sets of cageless needle bearings. Jay replaces those with caged needle bearings. So the e12 is a partial rebuild. Both felt great while driving and neither has leaked.

Jay has done our boxes and I can say that he does good work. As far as tightness, o-rings and gaskets won't fix that. Worn parts would be replaced if they are available. Otherwise, adjustment of what you have is as good as it can be, by someone who knows how to do it. Since he does his thing ten minutes from me, I'm good with that.

After all these years, I'm amazed that there are no simple DIY tutorials on E28/E34 etc steering box rebuilds. Maybe I will need to be that one next year.. Mine also needs a rebuild pretty badly. I really hope I can improve the box, I don't fancy converting to a rack. My e34 was more than enough work..
