A day at the track with the E28
A day at the track with the E28
Hello everybody!
So, it has been quite a while since I tracked the E28, and that's mainly because it was (and is) in need of some suspension work. But there was a special event of CUAS (Club Uruguayo de Automóviles Sport, something like Uruguayan Club of Sport Automobiles).
It was theoretically a regularity event, but I wasn't in the mood for that, and my usual copilot for regularity rally was missing .
So, some pictures of the day:
Now getting a bit more into it
And this happened when I had to overtake a car and ran out of "clean" braking zone
Killed the front tires, but had a ton of fun
That's it! no more track days for poor boaty mcboat for a while

Always great seeing E28s on track.
Re: A day at the track with the E28
Nice!
It's always a little scary seeing how much a tire moves around on a wheel on track.

Beautiful car & great photos. Just curious - what is your wheel / tire setup? Your wheels look like 16x8 Style 5s from an E38 (which is a very frequent swap) but I could be wrong...
Re: A day at the track with the E28
Thanks to all for the replies! I really had fun even though it's not a car to do that with given that it's mostly stock and rather big haha.
Foonfer: yes, they are E38 wheels, the tires are 205/55/16, had them as a carry over from the E39 wheels I had before (same design, just 7 inches wide instead of 8). This track is the last thing these tires will see, I just received some 5mm spacers so I can fit 225/50 tires

Re: A day at the track with the E28
I know no one's asked, but I would recommend 215/55 over 225/50s. I once tried 225s and the steering feel was very heavy. I have even heard that 205/55-16s are the sweetest sweet spot, but never tried them myself.
Re: A day at the track with the E28
I agree, I think 205 is the right fit (at least with the current setup), the car doesn't need more grip and any extra tire is extra weight.Foonfer wrote: Jan 06, 2024 5:33 PM I know no one's asked, but I would recommend 215/55 over 225/50s. But the 205s and probably 215s look wrong on the 8inch rim, currently they look stretched. 225s are on the "thinner" side of 8inch rims. That's the only reason I'm changing tire width
Re: A day at the track with the E28
Exactly - which makes me want to ask, have you tried 16x7" or 7.5" wheels?Ju@n wrote: Jan 06, 2024 6:16 PM

Few examples:
Style 29 16x7s can be had for not a lot of money, are light and look good. You need hubcentric spacers.
Style 42 16x7s are not my fave on an E28, but not terrible either. I think you need spacers
Style 5 and Style 8 16x7.5s are a bit rarer (that's what the E28 M5 and the E31 came with, respectively, and both those cars came stock with 225 and 235 tires anyway)
I'm just a firm believer in the 16x7 size...
Re: A day at the track with the E28
I used to have 7inch wide rims, changed over to 8 inches because a friend needed thinner rims and he happened to have what I ended up with. Still, I don't think going to 225 will be such a horrible thing
They will for sure look better, even if they perform the same or even a bit worse. Besides, I do have a TCD Turbo kit waiting to go in... which will surely love a bit extra grip in the back hehe
