St. Paddy's Day 2024 O'Fishel Thread March 15-16

Post by wkohler »

We're doing it again! St. Paddy's Day in San Diego, CA! St. Patricks Day is on March 17, as usual, but this year, March 17 is a Sunday, so our festivities will be the 15th and 16th.

The 16th will work as usual, head on down to the Mission Bay Boat Ramp parking lot adjacent to I-5 (and oddly Mission Bay - weird, we know). Exit at the Claremont Dr/Mission Bay Dr exit and you won't have to be the King of Wishful Thinking to Go West and find the parking lot. This starts around 9ish and lasts until we get kicked out or we feel like heading out, whichever comes first.

Afterwards, Carl Nelson of La Jolla Independent has graciously offered to host us again for the third year. It's worked out really well and they are used to hosting large groups. Excellent food and beverages will be available. Please bring a donation for our hosts.

For the out-of-towners and others, we will have something Friday night. If you are going to be in town Friday evening and would like information, you can reach out to me. If you don’t want to talk to me (most don’t and I wouldn’t), you can also reach out to photopark or MLastovo and they can fill you in.

Oh, almost forgot. Gumball.

I'll give you a hint:
"When the codeword "gumball' is mysteriously passed around, a bunch of zany characters gather to take part in a nonstop car race from New York to California, simply for the glory"

It depends on several factors:
-Artwork: You have to a design to start with. This usually is needed to garner interest for the pre-orders to determine your demand (see below)
-Demand: How many shirts, what color, what sizes, Short and/or Long sleeve. All this needs to be determined before you get a price quote and order anything from the printer.
-Cost: Unit costs for sale are greatly determined by volume (unless you don't care about losing money). In the past for orders around 75-80, the cost outlay is usually near $1,000 out of pocket and that keeps going up every year.
-Timing: At this stage with just over 4 weeks until the event, printer schedules are the bigger issue than costs. Most of the shirt printers we worked with in the past (and trust), need anywhere from 4-6 weeks for orders like ours. Of course you can rush things, but that costs more money. In the past, the process for any shirt offerings for SPD begins at the beginning of January.

Speaking from experience from doing this, it takes an awful amount of time and energy to get them designed, printed, deal with the printer, get them and process them for sale (both at the event and shipping/mailing). It is a lot one person (usually it's just one) to at least break even let alone make any kind of profit.
If you want to step up for next year (pretty sure this thing will continue into the future), you're welcome to give it a go. I can pass along the printers that have done it in in the past as well as contacts of others we solicited.

Figured it wasn't going to happen this year, (no calendar? no shirts? bummer) I know it takes a lot of effort Vince. Thanks for the breakdown of everything. I'll see about next year.

I also miss the calendar so much, I'm looking at a friggin' cute, cuddly, red Panda Bear for the month of February (San Diego Zoo Calendar) and not someones nice E28. It's so sad...

Now, back to wrenching on this BMW Diesel after finding all the damn broken sensors I needed and getting this 524td polished up for next month.

JP from La Jolla Independent has asked if we can get a head count for Saturday for "planning purposes." I think this has something to do with the amount of food but could also be for no reason.

Hope to have a few more details soon re: waterfowl arranged in a line.
