Hello all! I just bought this E28 3 months ago!

Post by Euroboidrew »

Image hello mye28.com, my name is Andrew and I have a 1987 528e. I am excited to be doing so much to this car. I am excited to be sharing this build as I go along in the process of restoring it, and making it (kinda fast) and making it a high quality car! A little backstory, I found this e28 on marketplace and got it for 2500$, came with an M54B25 which I have sold. The gentleman I bought it off of, runs a transport company and delivered it to my house for free when I bought it! I absolutely have had a blast working on it so far, it’s got a new Waterpump, new alternator, starter and a bunch of other things are getting dealt with like front damage, and oil in the exhaust. But it’s all a process and things take time. Excited to go along and make this car back to its former glory.

 Glad you could make it.

Address the timing belt sooner than later
or you'll be wanting that M54 back.

We will require some pics of the car.

Fast is asking a lot from an 87 528. You may be barking up the wrong tree if that's the objective. It can be done but it's a whole thing.

Welcome to the group!

But listen to Sherman, (1st 5er) and do the timing belt. They have a definite finite lifespan and are unforgiving if they break. So does the engine, break that is.

Glad it got replaced! It’s the first thing I’ve done! “Kinda” got the motor taken apart awaiting delivery of all front main seals, and to get my starter rebuild done.

End goal is not too crazy, and has been done. 500whp on a 2.5 head swapped M20B27. Planning on probably taking the motor out soon and just rebuilding it from the ground up with new forged internals etc;

Congratulations! Funny, I got a 528e 1988 like a month ago and now working/planing on what to do with it. Car is naturally under powered for my preference, but is in great shape, no rust, great interior and 103k miles... Planning on turbo or stroker or both... trying to gather more info on how to etc.... I'm on learning stage now lol..
Best wishes to your build! When I get smarter in the subject matter I will post my progress, hopefully help someone looking to do a similar build...
but so far it seams that the learning curve its pretty long... hahaha

If you have an automatic, time to convert to manual. That is the single most cost effective upgrade that will contribute to the enjoyment of the car more than every other upgrade to a 528e added together.

Welcome to the group loco!

As far as more power, uh, it is already a stroker, at least compared to most M20 engines. But a change in diff ratio can wake it up, the 2.93 eta's came with is pretty tall, 3.25 or 3.46, and or an e to i conversion which gets you close to M30 power.

I had a few questions to run by all of the E28 experts.
1. Looking to do a 2.5 head swap within the next 6 months. Any tips, suggestions?
2. Curious about an issue I've been having with my transmission when the car was running. It got stuck in gear when I had it running and after I had it parked for a month. Also, it refuses to go into reverse. I can get it into reverse, but it immediately pops out of gear and doesn't want to go into gear. Thoughts? Possible Fixes?
3. Horsepower Limits on stock 2.7 Block, 2.5 head, and the transmission?
4. Is there a 6-speed conversion out there for the M20B27? I think a 6-speed transmission would be much more desirable than the current 5 speed transmission. I have not been able to find a definitive answer or guide to this question so I ask all of you, my fellow brethren if you may guide my in the right direction.
5. Upgraded Differential? End Goal with the car is 500whp (turbo-charged obviously), I don't know the exact specs of my E28 and all of the parts that follow.

If you have grueling made it this far, thank you. Any Tips, Advice, or guides are greatly appreciated as I am majorly starting to love this car more and more each and every day. (Even though it doesn't currently run), I am looking forward to having a fun, comfortable car and get this OG back on the road in due time. Thank you all.
