FAQ: e28 friendly smog shops

Post by DavidE9 »

I've had significant issues with shops that insist my 1988 E28 came with a check engine light and failed me when they could not find it. I thought it might be helpful to start a list of shops that have the correct information:

San Diego area shops:

https://encinitassmogcenter.com/
https://wentworthautomotive.net/ - Speak to Justin.

I too had some confusion when trying to smog my 1988 528e. I had never seen a check engine light illuminate when starting up. Turns out PO had conveniently removed the bulb…

Berkeley/Albany Shops:

EZ Star Smog Test Only 2 — Correctly failed me for having a missing check engine bulb. But suggested I check behind cluster to see if the bulb was out. Well-played, PO.
1299 San Pablo Ave
Albany, CA 94706
United States

4 LessSmog — First successful smog check under my ownership after installing CE bulb and socket.
1201 The Alameda
Berkeley, CA 94707

I got my 85 e24 smogged here back in June:

Capitol Snell Smog
3939 Snell Ave Ste B
San Jose, CA 95136
(408) 224-9998 or maybe (408) 363-1187

Only question was about a fuel pressure gauge I have installed in the engine bay. Passed with flying colors with an MS2 install.
