What would it take to put a G265 in a G260 car?

Post by Jeremy »

I know you need the transmission/bellhousing itself, and the crossmember, but beyond that it gets kinda vague . . .

265 specs a different driveshaft than the 260, but is the difference enough that the splined center adjuster can't make up for it?

Stock, 260 = aluminum shifter console 265 = sheet metal

Would the car need to be back-converted, or can the aluminum console be used?

Jeremy,

In addition to the items you know you'll need to change, you also need the correct driveshaft. The differences in length are too great to take up with the splined section.

Jim Bledsoe has allegedly used the aluminum shift console on a G265. It requires a bracket from the E30 M3 which also used the G265 tranny. What I don't know is which shift console, E30 M3 or E28 to use. Jim should be able to answer that question for you.

Answer for what's needed:

G265 driveshaft

G265 transmission crossmember

BMW Part # 25 11 2 225369 "Bow"

BMW Part # 07 11 9 912588 "Hex Bolt" x 2

Essentially, the hex bolts attach the aluminum shift console to the transmission via the "bow" Parts come from a later model e30 M3 which used the G265 with the aluminum shifter console.

Shifter parts should be the same as for the '85 e28 G265 or e28 M5, but I haven't been able to confirm that for sure yet.

The shifter rod for the G265 and the G280 is the same PN, the differences in the shifter itself are trivial. The G265 shifter will have the upper nylon cup and a large flat washer, while the G280 M5 shifter is like the one used in the G260/6 tranny which snaps into a nylon cup in the aluminum shift console.

Ron @ Autosolutions told me his '85 G265 shifter and the E28M5 shifter are the same units with the exception of the parts I've mentioned above.

I think there are probably some differences in BH bolts.

The bracket pieces for the cat are different.

tranny mounts.

BH cover plate is sheet metal, rather than cast.

not sure about differences in clutch, maybe that's just for 265 vs. 260/5.

the guibo and its bolts may be different as well.

You don't need a shift detent ball cover plate or gasket.

Are you sure about that? I can't find it in RealOEM (other than a pic) and the car I took a G265 out of had the same cast cover as my G260/6 has. According to RealOEM, there's no difference between the G260, G265, and auto tranny cast piece.

They're all the same.

There are two different G265 bell housings. One uses the cast aluminum support the other uses the sheet metal inspection cover.

Ah, good! I was hoping I wouldn't have to venture back to the junkyard in search of the car and whatever might still be left!

if you use the bow piece you will have to exchange the aluminum 260/6 console shifter for an aluminum shifter from an e30. The e28 260/6 piece is too long
