Under engine tray?
Under engine tray?
I've searched but lack the correct term I suppose.
Does anyone have the correct name and/or part number for the under engine aerodymanic tray. Not talking about the aggregate protection plate, aka skid plate.
Mucho appreciated,
dj

It will go in no trouble. If you look at the underside of your frame rails, the mounting points are there. You'll see the flimsy-ass point up front where one unnamed company thought you could bolt a chassis-stiffening brace. Obviously BMW thought it was good for little more than some plastic (though that is a mounting point for the aggregate protection plate). It connects there and then further back on the frame rail. The only differences in US/Euro valances are the cutouts for turns/fogs.djazz wrote:No just a 535i, and I don't really want the full M-tech look. I may go euro bumpers later but I'd like a true Q-ship look so I'm checking out less obvious ways to improve stability.
Could this work on it's own? With US and/or euro valance?
Any more info would be great.
Thanks,
dj
In fact, pdx528e's old '83 had one of those fitted when new. I imagine it's incredibly useful in Portland since every time I hit little more than a smattering of water, the belts would squeal then I'd lose power steering - once while making a u-turn.
Just a 535i? How often do you think that was uttered in the 1980s? That's top of the line, baby...until 1987.

The undertray in my M535i looks more like #6 than #7 in that diagram, but the cutout in the bottom is shaped so it fits fairly closely to the oilpan. I have to take it off to do oil changes. Also, the front edge fastens to the rear edge of the M-tech bumper cover.
I think I have a photo of it on my computer at home, I'll try to post a picture tonight.

Anyone know if it is #6 & #7, or one or the other? I'm asking because I can see where #6 would go to the M-Tech kit, but #7 looks like it would match up to a valance.
Pics would be great. And I'd love to see one with a door for the drainplug.

You want Item #7. This part is used on the Euro M5 without the M-Tech kit and bolts up to the standard front valance.

That's why eventually I want to come up with some sort of quick release mount for the thing, with Dzus fasteners or something. I have gotten pretty good at R&Ring the thing, I can even change oil without jacking the car up (I do have long arms.)a wrote:If you plan to clone one.,a 2'' hole cut into it under the oil drain plug and a KO plug would solve the PITA oil drain. In a fit of drunken bravado , I volunteered to do an oil change on Ted Kalman's M 535i . Between the tray and the old school basket oil filter
FYI,
Here's the "full undertray" used on the Euro M5 (and other big-six engined E28s). It will not fit on the M535i or cars with the M-tech front spoiler.
What's nice about this one is that it covers up the wheel wells, and goes all the way forward to the edge of the valance. It's a very nice piece.

Re: Under engine tray?
Hey guys,
Just been digging through and came up with this thread. Can anyone confirm which tray is the one compatible with the M535i, with MTech bumpers? realoem lists 3 P/N, one being for aircon cars.

I have an aircon M535i MTech car, UK spec, so I want the correct tray for it.
Cheers,
Robert

Re: Under engine tray?
Very cool part...
Re:
I was fortunate to receive this part with my latest 528i acquisition, even though its been damaged and modified at some point.stuartinmn wrote:I knew I had some more pictures...here are top and bottom views of the M535i undertray off the car.
Should still be cool to figure out a way to mount it and enjoy all the aero tray goodness.
