No one can answer your question. You've omitted a vital piece of info, the wheel width.

Mosty likely, you're running 8 or 9 inch wide rear wheels. I'm running 245/40ZR17's on my car right now, and I get only minor rub with a full load. You should be fine with 225's, but the rears often can go up to 255, it just depends on your level of modification to the fenders and other clearances.

225/45-17 is the way to go.

do you think 235/45 would be too wide with a 2in. drop?

I'm not the expert, here, but...
235 may be a little too wide for a 7.5" rim. It will fit, but it's probably not optimal. Seems like it would "bulge" over the rim.
235/45 would be a little bigger (diameter) than ideal, but will probably work better than 235/40. I think of blowouts and bent rims with 235/40s...
I'm sticking with 225/45-17. At any rate, they're cheaper than the wider tires...

A 235-section should be fine, but to be absolutely sure, check with the manufacturer's data.
