My Dad has been looking for a sporty coupe in the 25k range. He looked at all the typical German coupes. He really liked the CLK430 but wanted a manual tranny. I pointed him to the 2004 GTO. Due to the understated styling the cars are selling for 10k under the sticker. He just made a deal on a red/black 6 speed. Brand new for get this, $23,200! That's nuts!

I already told him that his car is going to appear in some video getting killed by several TCD cars. :D

The GTO is a very decent car for the money (even for the list price). The problem is the looks don't appeal to or excite the general US market. Therefore, you can get them for peanuts!

GREAT deal! Tell your dad good luck with it.

Yeah it's crazy how low the prices dropped on the '04s. Pat's in Reno picking his up today in fact.

Unfortunately you guys on the East Coast got better rebates than we did over here, but I seriously was considering dropping the E34 there for a while.

Your 535i turbo has been broken so long that people think you are talking abt the 524td when you refer to an e28 turbo. Get that junk fixed! BTW, it's been broken since 11/2003! I have put 17k on the 325i since yours has been broken!

The GTO is not that bad looking of a car. Not alot of trunk space!

True enough. I think Pontiac would have done better leaving it with the more "muscular" nose treatment the Monaro has... it's still more svelte than it is butch though. It could certainly use more red meat in it's diet, for sure.

Outstanding buy, Todd- I think your dad will love it. After driving mine for 13 hours and 840 miles this weekend, I am even more impressed than I expected to be. The torque is addicting, ride quality is excellent (think E39 Sport), fit, finish and interior quality is very "un-GM" and it's a great car to drive on the highway or in the twisties. A classic GT car.

The styling is rather bland and I don't stand and stare at it like I did my 535i, but it's good for stealth, especially in the silver color I have. Nobody's going to give the car a second look, least of all cops, and that's fine with me.

As for TCD cars, bring the boost, baby. :) Most "normal" drivers are running 13.5@104-105mph in 2004 models, and one particularly good driver ran a 13.1@106. Yes, stock. The 2005s bring another 50 horsepower to the table with the new LS2 engine and should be into the 12s without much fuss.

Them Aussie blokes build a hell of a car.

Pat,

I think Craig is going to eat your GTO for lunch before the end of the summer! My Dad will be arriving 2/17 so I'll be able to give the car a good shake down.

I wish I could buy one myself.

I think you'll be impressed. It's a really nice car and drives very, very well.

Here's mine- I've never owned a silver car before, but I really like this one.

Pat - Very nice! I've been SOOOOOO tempted to stop by the Pontiac dealership
just to have a 'look see'. Just afraid of what may happen once I take a test drive.

Having had a '68 GTO (best car ever, even better than my e28, sorry), it would be
the only non-BMW car I would consider buying...especially at the reduced price.

Keep us posted on how it goes....congratulations!!!

Be careful John. Once you drive one, you're going to start scheming on how to get one. :D

Though this car is pretty far removed from your old GTO, it's definitely worthy of the GTO name. The looks are pretty understated, but so were the original GTOs. And it goes like stink- faster stock than any GTO that came before.

One thing to look for if you do drive one- the cam is lumpy enough that the car rocks at idle. I LOVE that characteristic, especially in a brand new factory car. Holden got it right.

Pat -
Sent you an email earlier today but maybe you didn't get it...?
Anyway, just wondering what price i should go in with on an offer...IF i fall victim that is!!
Also, wondering why you picked up your car in Reno instead of Seattle (besides the fun
in driving it home, of course). Are the prices that much better in Nevada?

Have fun dude,

Holden--lumpy idle, did I miss something, doesn't the GTO have some sort of the vette engine in it, made in america?

Well picking the car up well away from home does allow the limited use breakin period disappear more quickly!!

The car has the GM LS1 346cid V8 that was standard in the C5 Corvette. In GTO trim, it's rated at 350hp/365lb-ft. Tremec T56 six-speed manual, independent rear with Dana 3.46 gearset and limited slip. Bosch traction control (which I seem to get into about every two minutes).

John, it's a buyer's market for these cars, although California is the absolute worst place to try to buy one. Check GMBuypower.com to see if dealers close to you have any 6-speeds in stock. GM is giving dealers a $5000 "final pay" right now to try to clear out the 2004s, so deals in the $24,xxx range are not uncommon. Invoice price for a six-speed is around $31,070, unless it's the limited edition Pulse Red, add another $250 for that.

I personally wouldn't pay more than $24,500 for one. I got mine via swapalease.com- I found a guy in Reno who needed to get out of his lease after only three months and 1200 miles. The process took about two weeks, but the car is mine, in the color I wanted, and the monthly is about $85 less than any of my local dealers were willing to go.

I didn't get your e-mail- my current address is patrick dot newton at comcast dot net.

I did some seraching on the internet and there are not many 2004's left around here. But i just HAD to stop by the local Pontiac dealer after work today. Checked out the 2005's....looks are okay but the quality of the car is simply no match compared to BMW's. The 2005 has the LS2 with 400HP...no doubt it's got enough punch but i didn't dare drive it as they're not dealing on them yet. Guy would go down to 'around 30k' from the sticker of 33k. Guess i'll just have to wait.
