E28 M50

I've searched and searched all over the internet. I have read from this site alone close to 100 posts about someone with an E28 M50 and how they are so common. However, I have never seen pictures of such a feat. I don't want to hear about how a M30 would be so much better for this or that. I just want to see one that has been done.

j/k.. i dont think i've ever heard of someone doing that but i'm sure its been done.. its seems to be really common in e30's..

I had one in my gallery a few years ago. I e-mailed with the guy for a little while for details about it. He also posted some info on the board (can't remember if it was MyE28 or Roadfly).

I still have the pics and the e-mails somewhere, but I have no time right now. I'll try to remember to post the stuff this time tomorrow afternoon.

IIRC, he was using an M50B25 (E34 525i / E36 325i engine).

Well, whilst you rack your brain looking for an article on an e28.M50, feast your eyes on an e30 with an M50 with a bunch of details. The e28 would be much more roomy for the M50, but what you really want is an e36 M3 engine, which is 3.2 liters. That's the thing that ought to give you wood.

I'm also a R3vlimited.com member so I have seen my fair share of M30 and M50 powered E30's. An especially well executed example is by a member named StuMC. He has a stroked 3.0ltr M50 with a lot of goodies. All this packaged into a black 318is with a badge that reads 316d. It's a sleeper.

FYI, every BMW in existance that is not a "M" car is a sleeper. They garner zero respect from everyone outside the BMW community. I don't get going from 318is to 316d. The 318is is slower than most current Minivans and trucks. It's not like someone would avoid racing a 318is because they thought it was fast.

I looked for a while myself and didnt get much in the way of direct info on the conversion, thoughI did read a list of parts/procedures in the Roadfly archives.
I do know that you would want to start with a 528e due to the difference in brake boosting system.
In the end, I figured that it would only really be worthwhile if one was going to build the motor, like say a 3.2 with cams, etc. Otherwise the M30 is pretty much just as well and MPG doesnt seem to be as different as the EPA specs would say. I averaged about 24 in a 98 M3 and probably about 21-22 in an M30 car with 3.73.
Of course a cammed S52 with about 300hp in unstressed condition would be the bomb in a old lightweight 528e!
I hope you will do a writeup if you do the conversion.

its been bandied about here,..and is one of the projects thats scheduled for "when time allows"

we just finished the bosses e34, 525 wagon.
yanked the 2.5 m50 out and replaced it with a 3.2 litre M motor, euro maf, and a custom burned chip.
we used the early non obd intake, non obd harness.......
the auto was pulled as well and replaced with a 5 speed and corresponding diff.

while its not a rocket sled...it definitely is a sleeper...and easily capable of power in reserve 100mph plus cruising. the results in a 500# lighter e28 should be compelling,.........
bilstein sports all around with B&G springs along with the brakes from an e32 750...

Ok, now that that is taken care of back to the subject at hand. E28 powered by an M50. Pictures?

On a side note that E39 M5 Touring is here in the US. It's actually spotted frequently by my apartment on Highway 92 in Woodstock, GA.

Have E28 M30. Need lots more power. Right hand drive, no space for turbo unless convert to rack and pinion!!, prefer not to.

Have access to 3.2 S50 going at affordable price because owner lost EWS box (but he has the ignition key) so the thing doesn't run.

It will go into the E28 if it can be made to run. Thought of megasquirt or SDS but don't think they control the twin vanos.

Any ideas?

Installing a supercharger would be easier than the engine change and provide between 25% to 75% more power depending on how much other stuff you do to beef up the engine. Since a supercharger like the Vortech or ESS goes on the left side of the engine where you have extra space, it's a marriage made in heaven.

My only question is, since the M50/M52/S50/S52 are the same motor wrt external dimensions, why waste time with the former two and not go for one of the latter instead? The swap would require much more custom work than an M30 swap, so the extra 50 hp of the S50 would make the extra work worth it.

Or you could get really greedy and hit up the Euro S50B32 (there was no Euro S52), which is good for 321 hp box-stock. If I were to undertake such a project, that would be the desired outcome. If you're seriously considering it, I'd go no later than the S50B30US ('95 M3 only), as the S52B32 is OBD-II and introduces a whole host of other issues.

FWIW I have never seen pics of said swap completed. As others have mentioned, the S50-into-E34Touring is a fun one, and pretty much a bolt-in since the E34 came with the M50. I can't fathom doing that change and NOT switching to a manual trans, though.

For the original poster, and whoever else would like to see, here are the only two pics I have of the guy's E28 I was talking about with the M50B25.

Here's his post on the board about the car. Everything that you see below is everything I know about the car, because he never posted an e-mail address and would never e-mail me about the car!

It is the motor from a '92 525. Used a much lighter flywheel from earlier 5 series.nCold air intake. The car was a 1988 528e. Exhaust from cat bach is for that year and model, cat forward is from the 525. Stainless steel brake lines, 750 calipers and rotors up front, rear will be from e34. 17 inch TSW REVO wheels with 215 45 17 Khumos, 325 rear end. 5 speed from e36 325. Car looks stock except for wheels. Original spedo and tach, tach bounces before rev limiter comes on. Been a blast to drive but only got up to 130mph so far. Motor has more to give.
