Restoring my 1985 535i (11-7 pic update)

Post by M. Holtmeier »

The car is still far from complete. I thought I would share the work I completed over the summer. At this point it's down to odd and ends and
final "finishing," which I imagine will consume another 20 years of my life. :)

I originally purchased this car to serve as a daily driver. Posted on ebay by a high school student in Arkansas, the car needed a good amount of
repairs. Several interior panels were held in with duck tape, the body was three different shades of red, the front and rear suspenson were shot,
the exhaust was full of holes and there were marks from someone had tried to shoot the glass out with a bb gun. I probably could have started
with a better example, but the entire restoration was inch by inch until the bodywork started. Honestly, I wasn't even set up with the proper
equipment or facilities to carry out a full on restoration. It was very much a learning, and tool gathering, process! I was just thrilled to finally have
a big six 5 speed e28! I couldn't leave well enough alone, and after becoming addicted to MyE28.com, it was all downhill at that point.

First things first.
After discovering Turbo Charging Dynamics, I knew this car was going to turbocharged, no "ifs, ands or buts" about it. I purchased a partial kit
from Todd and installed it on my 200k mile engine. One summer and one clutch later, I had found all the weak points of the drivetrain. After
thouroughly trashing every mount and bushing, the turbo return line collapsed internally and forced oil by the turbine seal, causing heavy
smoke from the exhaust. Figuring this was the end, I pulled the motor and disassembled it. Everything was ok, but the pitons and cylinder
walls were showing their signs of wear. A rebuild was at hand!

Here's the full story on the turbo and megasquirt build from 2008;
http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=42 ... sc&start=0

A few pics from that build.

Here's how the car looked early 2009 right after I installed euro bumpers...
Image
Image

...and with the pfeba spoiler, style 66 wheels and front fenders no thanks to whoever hit the car.

Onto the bodywork.
I completely converted the body of the car to euro specifications. The front bumper trim holes are filled in, a new oem front valance was
used and a euro tail panel was installed. The exhaust will be centered to the rear cutout and dual tips will be installed.

Some rust repair.

Fixing dents and dings. The right rear door was rusted along the bottom edge where the door seal sits. I found this odd as all the
other doors were completely rust free. I replaced the door.

And we're off! I lost my original workspace to finish a "correct" paint job, partly due to a miscommunication with the
owner of the company I was working with and partly due to me going to work with a new company(both completely unrelated)
Since my original plan of painting the whole car myself, the way I wanted to do it, didn't pan out I had a local paint shop
apply the paint. Because the project was derailed from its plans of a perfect DIY restoration(being that engine was already
back in), I had a decision to make. I knew the paintjob I was going to do would have its imperfections, but at least the
process would have been right and the experience would have been awesome. I knew the amount of money I was putting into
the car was never going to be recuperated by selling the car as a whole either. I decided to keep the total amount
spent on the shell of the car as low as possible while spending up for the bolt in items. After shopping around, I decided to
have -this is going to hurt- MAACO paint the car. There, I said it. Minus the purchase price of the entire vehicle, I have less
than $3000 in the actual shell of this car. I am 66.5% happy with the job. Some of you may remember my thread on the engine bay
overspray debacle. Well, the guys at this location bent over backwards to make things right and didn't stop until I was happy.
I'll never be happy with a respray though, it's just never factory equivelant. I'm sure if I were on the other side of the fence
with a $10k+ paint job I'd hate the fact that I could never bring myself to drive the car and enjoy it for what it is. The whole
turning wrenches and fixing stuff up thing is quite the drama inducing hobby to keep in balance. You have your ups, you have your downs
and you end up settling somewhere in between.

With the windows out for paint, it was a perfect time take care of a few interior things.

Paul Ladue leather dash.

Jim's upholstery recovered the front e30 sport seats, rear seat and all 4 headrests in leather.

Unisuede headliner. Like my pin cushion?

A new mtec2 wheel and black plastic to "Kohlerize" the interior. Also in this pic; mtec flares, TCD valve cover and oem headlight
wiper arms and blades.

Image

I still have the style 66 wheels, but when I first came to this site my dream E28 quickly became a zinno on gold centered BBS RSs.
I found a set of staggered 16x9(061) and 16x8(022) somewhere in CA. I payed entirely way too much for them and put even more into thier
restoration. I now own a blast cabinet! The wheels were chemically stripped, lips repaired then blasted. The centers were painted with GrimmSpeed gold
and the outer lip and inner hoop were polished.

Uh oh, I seem to be missing some assembly pictures...

...Schatzi, did you take them?

Some final product* pics. I know the tow hook covers are missing, I'm having a hard time installing the Pfeba
spoiler. It's so nice not having to worry about it dragging on the ground.

(*for now)

Awesome! I wish I had the money and the time to be able to do this to my car, absolutely fantastic! In my opinion the center console would look better if it was also Pearl Beige since the driver-side bolster and glove box aren't grey. Just my two cents. Thanks for sharing!

From BMW. I went through Blunttech, but I'm sure Brian the parts pimp can get you one. Part #41341927436.

I wanted to Randy, believe me, but it wasn't all put back together yet. Next year for sure! I don't care where it's at, driving this car never ceases to amaze me! :haul:

Wow. I am without speech. That takes a lot for me.

Please paint the rockers and the lower part of the valance black, though. I'd also do the 40mm extension on the tail panel. Completes the look. I do like the shadowline, but leaving the drip rail alone. It updates the look, but doesn't make it look like you're trying. Nice job.

It's nice to see your car all gorgeous like that. I'll figure out something along the lines of a red E28 someday.

Thanks Chris, and thanks everyone else too!

I'm still refining it, but i had to come to a stopping point for the year. The rockers, valance and tail panel will be painted black, but I'm going to wait until spring when I pull the exhaust down to center the tailpipe. At any angle other than straight from the back, the red tail panel lip looks goofy and stands out to me.

The deadline has passed, but damn...your restoration should be a "exception to the rule". Its hotter then July and that the month it should represent. Nothing beats a failure but a try. Good luck :alright:

You're welcome! If it is too late, then 2012 will be YOUR year...I think you say the restoration will be completely finish by then. And like it was said before...think about painting the bottom of the valance and rocker panel black. I think the black will enhance the black trim.

Having seen this car in person, the pics don't do justice to the details that I know Mike has spent countless hours working on. It is work like this, and this post sharing those details, that raises the bar for all of us...incredible car...great job Mike.

Thanks, that is exactly what I was going for. The turbo adds a certain "busting at the seams" detail that is hard to hide. For example; if I want to the rear to have any chance at sticking, wheel and tire choices become difficult to keep the car inconspicuous.

These are 245/50-16s and the style 66s wear a 265/40-17. The g-force sports are doing well, I recently took this car on a 250mile drive through Loess Hills where I was able to bury the 150mph speedo and still feel like I was going 65.

Still need to black out the tail panel extension and fix the exhaust.

that is a gorgeous ride, my man! I would never be able to tell from those photos that you saved $$ with a MAACO paint job. Love the wheel choice and the two tone interior.

Completing the shadowline, tinting the windows lightly, and putting a pearl beige shift boot in the car would be TITS.

The MAACO that applied the paint did do a pretty good job. It's not perfect by any means. The fate of the paint was more or less set in stone 2 years ago when I needed to get the drivetrain back together without having the exterior bodywork and paint completed. To some that's no big deal, but to me- and my first attempt at restoring a complete car, it was. I think the car would have been painted much sooner if I weren't going back and forth on how to "correct" the situation I put myself in. The end result is; a: a decent paint job including jambs under hood and trunk, b: a super fast car that I'm not worried about driving or working on to make it faster, c: a "host" shell that can give up it's parts and leave little financial waste behind.(I think I could even cut the tail panel back out if I had to)

It is, after all, a US 535i*... but I sure hope it's not the last e28 I will have the pleasure of restoring!

(*I mean that purely from the standpoint of having the restoration completed by a novice, not that the car itself is any less of an e28. Now, if it were an ///M car I'd be going a completely different route. Only problem with that is, this car will flat out smoke those ///M cars! Except maybe Ken's car. :) )

On the shadowline. I wanted to try out keeping the drip rail bright. I've never seen anyone do that and I think it distinguishes the roof line from the doors. I like how shadowline on the doors and front/rear windows really gives a modern look but didn't want to get rid of all the chrome and brightwork that gives it a classic look either. I was torn on this decision with the tail lights also.
skip535i wrote:Completing the shadowline, tinting the windows lightly, and putting a pearl beige shift boot in the car would be TITS.
Skip, on the windows do you mean I should remove the 20% thats on it now and go lighter?

Make no mistake, I'm not knocking the car, and I LOVE it.

I'm an idiot...I guess some of the pictures looked like the windows weren't tinted. I think that 35-50% tint is perfect...20% to me means you're looking at NO chrome/aluminium on the car at all.

If that was my car (which means it wouldn't be nearly as nice  ), I'd keep the tint and either finish the shadowline (bumpers included), or go back to the aluminium window trim.

Either way, get a pearl beige shift boot.

Beautiful Car

I like the drip rail and the tail lights. The cool thing about the rear of the car being so bright is that when you pass someone, it looks like they got passed by something quite old. The driver could be heard saying, "Is that there one of them Bavarias?"

I shot these with my first digital SLR, a 5 year old Canon Rebel XT, that I just got from my older brother a few weeks back. I'm starting my trek on being able to take a decent photos, so let me know what I'm doing wrong in these pics. :)

Really makes me realise how much more work I have to now do on my turbo build. You've just pushed my ETA out by another few months, as I am now going to pull it all apart again and attempt that level of cleanliness. Beautifully done.

Damn you.
