The Thread of Randomness. . .
When I was a kid, my mom would put Karo corn syrup on the table alongside the maple-flavored syrup. I thought that was perfectly normal, but when I first did that after my wife & I were together, she was aghast. That stuff is for cooking! she said. Corn syrup is corn syrup whether it's got flavoring & coloring in it.
Mom also made her own phony-baloney syrup once in a while using Mapleine flavoring mixed in with some sugar, water & corn starch. Passable, but less so than the bottled maple-flavored stuff. My wife got a recipe from a friend for a homemade creamy syrup that is pretty doggone good. Without digging up the recipe card, this one looks similar to hers.
Then there's the perennial favorite of fresh fruit with whipped cream on top of cakes or waffles. Or better yet, strawberries in syrup under that whipped cream... Yum! (now I'm getting hungry.)

Lol no, not knowing how or when to flip the thing, making a mess, etc...Cactus wrote:Goof them up as in not put ketchup on them?alijonny wrote:I can't wait to go to another BMW event so I can eat continental breakfast at the hotel. The syrup at cracker barrel is pretty damn good. My grandma used to make syrup using maplene extract and it was quite different but damn good. She made the best pancakes and waffles ever - all from scratch. Wow. Makes me sad just thinking about it. I will not use the corn syrup crap unless I'm being polite.

Had a couple of serendipitous moments over my lunch hour... Dropped off my Priority Box at the PO, then swung by Sam's Club to pick up a couple of things and grab a bite to eat (best $2.66 pizza combo in the world, btw.) I was about to leave Sam's, but turned around & went back for a refill on my drink, and bumped into a family friend standing there by the soda fountain. Our moms were childhood best friends, and our families got together often when we were kids, so we were like family. We've kept in touch over the years, but I lost track of him a while back. Turns out he retired from his job with the Fire Dept., built a house on an acreage about an hour south of here, and is loving retirement. Says he comes to SF about twice a year; I'm trying to figure out what the chances are that I'd bump into him like that...
Then as I was heading back to work, I got a call for help from my oldest son; he had been at a conference since yesterday and left his keys in his hotel room. I just happened to have a key to his car with me and just happened to be a minute or so away from the exit I'd need to take to get to him.
Call it fate or serendipity or coincidence or predestination or whatever... I thought those two things were pretty cool stuff!

A girlfriend's dog died in the winter when I was living in Cincinnati. We trotted the ole gal out to the edge of the property, said some words and I started to dig. Girlfriend was cold and didn't want to see the dirt thrown on her dog so she went back inside. (If you've ever dug a hole in the middle of winter in Ohio then you know where this story is going). So I dug and dug and finally placed her dog on it's back in the hole. It is now snowing and getting darker so I wrapped up my chore and went back inside to "comfort" my gal.
Well, springtime came and girlfriend was out working in the yard one day and tugged on what she thought were some branches sticking up out of the ground.
She still won't be my friend on Facebook for some reason.

I think (hope) you meant to post it in the joke thread?
Something tells me that is no joke! Gives a hoe-nuthah meaning to the term "dogleg"!Xenocide wrote:oldskool wrote:A girlfriend's dog died in the winter when I was living in Cincinnati. Just got back from a visit to the boys' room at work. There was someone in the stall being very aromatic when I got there, but I just stood to and went about my business. I heard the TP being used, the john being flushed a couple of times, then to my surprise my boss came out. He said hello & went to the sink; I didn't exactly time him, but I think the water ran for about a half-second, and he didn't use soap. He did grab a paper towel before heading out the door though, so I guess that's something.
I'm no Jerry Seinfeld, but yes, I did do a Howard Hughes & used a paper towel to open the door (and maybe clean the handle a little), and will hereafter think twice about what I do after shaking hands with him or working on his computer (I am the IT department, you know...) And people wonder why I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer and a container of antibacterial wipes at my desk.
I guess I should be thankful his name isn't Poppie and he doesn't run an Italian pizzeria. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssktVpcv9WI

Classic scene.
Worked with a guy here that did the same thing. One day he exited after bending das biscuit with no washing and the next time I saw him he was carrying a large can of mixed nuts, reaching in and eating them, then proceeds to offer me some. Declined. Just after this he offers another employee some and he accepts. gak! I told him later and he became somewhat ill.

Played golf with my BIL. I won by 5 strokes.

Bumped into another e28 owner today; turned out to be the 535i previously owned by mrdane. The new owner works at the O'Reilly Auto store I stopped at this afternoon. He's got a set of blacked-out Style 2s on it now, and just loves the car.

Well, it's that time of year again. The premier event on the Ocean Beach holiday season calendar and simply tout le monde will be there. That's right, it's the OB Christmas Parade tonight.
The whole town turns out and since it only costs around $5.00 to enter, half the people are IN the parade. It's one of the few days the cops don't write booze tickets so everyone is snockered. It's really hokey but that's what makes it so fun. The mayor of San Diego and other local politicians are in the parade and all of them get booed. You can tell it's a beach town when the police float gets booed and the lifeguard & fire dept. floats gets cheered wildly.
Here are some pics from past years.
Everyone ready - parade about to start.

That's awesome! I think I may have kept borrowed tools that long.Karl Grau wrote:I lent my soldering station to a guy at work 7½ years ago and It was just returned to me. I'm still a little choked up.
That parade looks like it could be a good time! We had the Parade of Lights in Sioux Falls last weekend. Low entry fee there too, so lots of floats from lots of businesses & organizations, and lots of peppermint schnapps (and other adult beverages) being sipped all along the route (a fella's gotta do something to keep warm!) One of the highlights every year is the hot air balloon gondolas that come through on trailers; if enough people yell for it, the balloonists will yank on the lever & shoot flames 20-30 feet in the air! Pretty spectacular, and it warms you up (a little) too!

Not any experience to mention, but Google is your friend and I'm bored. A friend has his cat trained to do that; freaked me out first time I witnessed the thing squatting on the john. He's still working on training the thing to flush; not going well.Brian in TN wrote:Anyone here have experience training a cat to use the toilet? Hints? Tips? Useless humor to add?
