Future mobile version of MyE28

Post by Justin_FL »

So now that I have my first smartphone, a Nexus Galaxy, I see this website doesn't look the best since the mast head at the top prevents everything from scaling to fit width-wise. The phone renders it fine but the zooming in and out business to read and navigate sucks, IMO.

Does anyone have examples of other phpBB forums with mobile versions available? I'd like to see some examples for ideas. I'm going to upgrade the forum software to the latest phpBB release and making a mobile version is certainly possible afterwards.

Don't let Blake see this thread!

The only forums I know of that have a mobile version are vBulletin.

:dunno: Works just fine for me. I'm on here constantly from my phone when I'm on my breaks at work, or even when I'm taking a break from working on the car.

With that said, I wouldn't mind having a mobile and more convenient version for the phone.

I have no issue on my Droid, I zoom in and it scales everything fine. The only thing that is a little iffy is making a long post on occasion.

I have a first generation Droid and it seems to function fine about 99% of the time. Most of my problems appear to involve bandwidth issues when I'm out and about.

Yea, same here. I wonder what Justin's seeing on his phone. Maybe it's some sort of issue with the new ICS OS browser.

I don't think anything's really wrong. I didn't clarify the issue is when holding the phone vertical (one handed operation). The mast head in that case is too wide. Posting text wraps very nicely, however, if there is quoted text in a thread the table box element does not wrap as the width in the HTML is scaled to a certain percentage of the layout width. The mast head table is the widest so the quoted text simply follows its width.

If I hold the phone in landscape mode its not a problem. With the Droid, I assume this is how everyone holds the phone so the keyboard can be utilized.

The fact that the forum needs to be on phpBB3 is urgent due to security bugs in phpBB2. The new version is mostly controlled with CSS styling so the possibilities for properly scaled pages for various resolutions are not too difficult. A separate option is adding the Tapatalk hooks so the reader app can work. There has been some changes and enhancements that have addressed some of my concerns since it was last considered. It's a $3 app so not free for users, although many people that read forums from their phone probably have it already.

x4. Looked great on my Droid and even better on the iPhone (font easier to read).

I use tapatalk for the M5board. It's not perfect and sometimes I have to pull up the site on a browser anyway to get to something specific.

I really like the bf.c mobile app.

I've got an iPhone 4s and can use Safari to browse MyE28, however, I find the mobile app for bimmerforums to be much easier to read and post replies to.

I've tried browsing a couple of forums that are 'smart phone active' on my iphail, and to be honest, the first thing I do everytime, is click the little link at the bottom that says 'see site in full version'

Phone version's just piss me off. This isn't to say it's not a good idea, but personally, i'll keep viewing it in full version regardless.

90% of the time I am here is on a smart phone so a mobile one is a great idea. Posting can be a PITA and it becomes cumbersone half the time. Not a site problem but doesn't adapt very well. Making photo posting part of this mobile version would be awesome as well!

Can we make it to where the mobile one blocks everyone's sig pics that slow down the page loading and a feature that turns huge pics into links?

That's my only beef with viewing the site on my phone. Too much shit on any given post.

And before I get the "you can turn sigs off" response, I usually browse from my phone without signing in.

I don't understand how you can possibly be seeing signatures and avatars without being signed in. They were disabled for guests quite a long while ago.

I don't either. I used to do that, but I ended up finding that it was quicker to browse by avatar sometimes, so I keep it logged in. Just checked it now and sure enough, no signatures or avatars.

Justin,
What you are proposing is a thing of beauty...can't wait until you launch it.

p.s.,
Your new Zinno 535is is absolutely one of the nicest I've ever seen. Kudos on a well-bought example. Can't wait to see what you do to make it "yours."

I've put a version of phpBB3 on the live server to test the performance and other settings specific to its configuration vs my offline private test one. I installed an auto-detecting mobile device style on there, too. Seems like it could use some tweaks here and there but overall looks quite serviceable.
