You never replied regarding battery placement.
I didn't realize that was an inquiry; from your comment it seemed like you were simply acknowledging and accepting the challenge of figuring it out.
cek wrote:You make a well articulated, clear argument. I knew if I pushed your button you would. :moon:

It *would* be interesting to figure out how to do it...especially the weight part (batteries). An 80s saloon chassis is just not conductive (pun intended) to good battery placement, me thinks.
And you do realize I'm not an expert on the subject, yes? ;)

I have had this tucked away in my bookmarks for a while though; it's for an e46, but the concepts could easily cross over to an e28. Motor and main battery pack in the front; with lithium ion batteries the weight of both should be relatively close to the original engine and shouldn't compromise balance at all with a range of 50-60 miles. On the e46 prototype from EVDrive site they added a 25kw range extender that fits in the spare tire well, and gives it a 300 mile range.

How's that to get you started? ;)
Thanks sir!

What a silly comment. What part of lighter than an S54, more power than an S54, more cheaply modded to S85+ power, more compact than just about anything other than a weeny 4-cylinder, robust, better fuel economy than an S54, and easily adapted to just about any chassis is bad?

Credit where due - the LS motor family is just about the best all-arounder engine family in decades.

Fucking snobbery.
Yes Sir! Threw the "iron Duke" away installed the LS2 & Bravo 1 in the 18 ft. Aristocraft, travel @ 60mph is simply 2700rpm, very stable over 100mph, that is as fast as It will carry me, there is still light years of power remaining unfortunately the 46 year old design is out of length and hull speed. Next big live aboard I buy will see dual LS3's for power and 1,000 lbs. reduction in total weight over the traditional 7.4's.
I agree with Tammer, the LSx series is the best thing to come about in 60 years of small block development. The pinnacle in marine use,
Google 557 Marine, look what ZF did.

After much thought between last post and this post, if you don't install a JUDD V8, you spitting upwind for distance, and real Inline 5 or 6 speed sequential gearbox WITHOUT PADDLES. you'll HAVE THE QUICKEST GROCERY GETTER AROUND!

Alright, I've found it. This is the best, most unconventional engine choice you could possibly make. I guarantee no one else is driving a BMW with an engine like this. Are you ready?

What kind of springs would you need on the front of that thing?

Off the line performance would really suck, but you could probably pull all the stumps out of your backyard!

Another one? Looks like a good starting point, but talk about yer fixer-upper! What's the wife say about this development?

;)

All said in jest, with more than just a tinge of envy. Looking forward to seeing where you take this one.

I think of it more like a blank canvas.

I noted above that she took it amazingly well:
The good news is Julie now knows I bought the damn thing and actually took it pretty well. She actually thought I said I was going to be building this E28 *for her*. She basically said NFW. I told her she mis-heard me and that I *knew* she didn't want an E28, that this was for me. Somehow this was fine with her.

I have a tinge of envy about your upcoming Griswold's European Adventure ;).

I'm looking forward to seeing where this one goes to. Lots of ideas, but no real plan yet. Now that it's in my possession the first step will be to poke around it and clean it up to see what I really bought.

Maybe a little late, but an n20 turbo four banger would be neat, it seems to push a heavy f10 around pretty decently. I'm sure it would be more than powerful for a light e28. And you could badge it as a completely stealthy 520i

Stevo12 wrote: That's why I'd love to see an N54. While I'm sure they're out there, you hardly see them as much as you do LS or S5x motor swaps. If they can pull like a freight train in a lard-ass E60 or F10...I can only imagine how an N54-swapped E28 would do. It would be a much more, um, interesting experience for you as well (which is what you mentioned earlier)
I'd already discounted the N54, but saw this today and thought it was funny.

Has anyone mentioned a flat plane ls swap with weber carbs? Metric and would sound like a Ferrari. Lingenfelter and a few others have done it, with fuel injection.

Cool! Now all you need is a complete 3D model of an e28 to go with it.
