Got a set of these for the M535i. VERY high quality parts - much better than stock. Highly recommended! :D

Still didn't fix my R tail light leak, though. Turns out the crappy made-in-Spain Hella part leaks around the upper frame. So Steve at BluntTech is working on a BMW warranty claim. Again.

Anybody know if these will work on E12? 1978 530i to be specific?

No. the E12 gaskets are a much more complex shape and totally NLA to boot.

Somebody was thinking of dipping or coating their original gaskets in a rubberized coating.

Well, what to do if your gasket is in pieces? My thought is trace the other gasket onto 1/8" cork sheet, then paint it with plastidip or something like that? I have heard that these are NLA, so what would be the answer to replacing these things? Oh- and again, these gaskets are for a 1978 E12 530i. Please pile on.

I may have some used ones in good shape, I'll take a look. Now they often get porous with age so no promises on that, but in good shape they may work and or let you shim with butyl caulk for more pressure. E12 taillights them selves are an issue too with the base cracking. The lenses stay good, but the base where they mount can be a problem.

1/8 cork wouldn't work, they're irregular thickness.

Great. Please let me know on the used gaskets (passenger side, if you had a complete pair, i could be interested too.). Do you think a 3/16" sheet of cork would work. I havent been able to look at it cleanly for some time. The old gasket , that is. Could i use if i had to a thicker sheet of cork and sand down the areas that need to be thinner. I ask again without being able to see tail lens cover and/or gasket. thanks again for the input.

No, cork won't work at all, you need something compressible and it's not really. A firm, but not too firm, putty might work.

I do in fact have both gaskets, I'll shoot you a PM.

I tried that. I used polyurethane caulk, a very good, flexible, high quality rubber like caulk, got it pretty well coated, but not smoothly. I figured the roughness would smooth out as it was clamped in place. For whatever reason they still leaked.

I have successfully used silicone to coat all sides and have it seal. You have to get it pretty smooth and let it dry, and the gaskets need to be in decent shape. One tube is enough for 2 gaskets. I buy new gaskets for the good cars. Quite frankly, $45 is worth it to not go through the hassle.

If anyone's interested, I have a fresh batch of tail light gaskets, just made yesterday.

I also have 3 or 4 sets of 'less than perfect' gaskets from my last batch for $30 shipped. Just don't want to charge full price for these; they're perfectly fine to use though.

I haven't see one in person but it does appear that those seals are of molded rubber design which is outside of my capabilities at the moment. They do appear to be readily available and not terribly expensive though.

Tail light seals still available for $45/pair, free shipping within continental US.

Yesterday I installed the first of the sets I've purchased.
Lil Red seemed to be smiling at the conclusion of the install.
