...and you've never really "known" how much fun the M30 is to own if you've never owned one with the original oil filter canister design :) :

By the way, can anyone spot the likely non-originality element on the BMW Museum's M30 above? :)

No, those are the regular exhaust manifolds. The non-original element is subtle in that most would overlook it completely since it is so common on what most people know of as M30 engines...especially *all* of the injected M30 engines sold, at least those sold stateside. (it's not emissions related in anyway).

The fan is black and has 8 blades instead of red with 5 blades?

Bingo! All early M30s to my knowledge, early meaning double Zenith M30s (i.e. E3, E9) had a 5 blade fan with a friction fan clutch (that sucked). This engine is sporting a 9 blade fan with a viscous clutch which didn't appear here in the states until the 530i/3.0Si circa 1975. :) Perhaps in Europe it was something that was still used on carb'd M30s too after they were gone here in the USA, so I'm out of line on this too...

Mr. OCD coupe. Absolutely stunning.

Mike in Seattle, I like that blue. It would be a good contrast to my alpine and go with my blue pinstripe.

M30's? Yeah I got 'em. I can make it rain m30's.

My 88 after I picked it up.

Image

And After some cleaning. Today it has an AFM cover and the b35 style wire cover.

Image

And I snagged this recently. It's going to get matched up with the g265 from my '85. I'm excited to do the work, and can't wait for the final result.

Image

Bonus m30 from my 85 on the the stand in the background. Just waiting to figure out what I want to do with it.

Image

And a couple of shots of it opened up. Pretty happy.

Sexy pic. I'm curious about the cover on the AFM. How did it come to have those stripes?

The stripes are already in the cover, Ray just used some of his wife's nail polish to paint them silver.
