I have BB Shiftless up on blocks for stem to stern work. The CSB let go in noisy fashion. The cat back re do was loose anyway The right outer tie rod end is bad, the rear brakes are shot and the lines to the brake hoses look bad enough to change pro-actively. The rear tires are shot, they will go on front until I get it aligned. It judders upon braking. I don't like the Bronzit beige , also the car is generally blah compared to the snappier B6 II. It has only 147 k and isnt as rusty as B6II. So It gets to be the last 528e for me.

Got The shaft out , The bearing is fine, The flap of rubber ripped . This could get fixed with oak, inner tubes and sheet rock screws.Kee - rist, even the CSB on the Rat is made better.

I packed the void between the bearing housing and the metal keeper with 2 1/2 turns of timing belt Then I filled some voids with more TB bits The bearing is now in a sort of pillow block.The width of a TB, about 25 mm, instead of a cheesy flap with no support at all. I'm gonna fair it up and shoot a few screws and rivets into it. Heck , When I was looking for the clunka clunk, I couldn't re-produce it with the car on blocks. I ran it up to 140. There was a vibration that came and went but it was just a vibration . After I took the cat- back off, I could reach up and shake the drive shaft. I knew what it had to be .I want some float but shouldn't need much to . The TB should provide some without letting the shaft hit the tunnel

Well my muffler fell off so I went to a cousins and he had an old one from his Subaru. Welded that up and My god it's loud
As I'm sure you can see it doesn't extend past the fuel tank, let alone the bumper. You can imagine
Then I bought a new Kirby complete system. As the guy kept saying, they aren't pushy salesman they ARE convincing however.

Poked around trying to figure out a weird problem with the 535is last night... The left rear marker light is always on. I noticed it last time I drove it, and tried pulling fuses to narrow down what circuit was acting up, but it stayed on the whole time. Strange. Didn't have time to mess with it then so I pulled the lamp socket thinking that would keep the battery from draining and left it.

Finally got back to on Sunday afternoon, but found that the battery was flat.

Crap.

Jump started it, and got it running fine. My daughter needed to go somewhere and hadn't driven that car yet, so asked if she could use it; I wanted to keep it running for a while to charge the battery anyway, so off she went. Got a call about a half-hour later; it had died suddenly and wouldn't start. Great.

Drove to where she was, and my roadside diagnosis skills were on holiday, so we just dragged it home. The Ride of Shame. Put the battery charger on it and let it sit to think about its wayward habits, but it still wouldn't start; turned over just fine, but no start. Monday was too busy to mess with it, but last night I figured out the no-start was due to a blown fuel pump fuse. Or rather a broken fuse, as I don't think it blew so much as it broke when I was fiddling with something else trying to fix the stray light problem. I think it was the original fuse.

So once it was running, I went back to trying to trace down the rear marker light problem. And after a lot of messing around I figured out that there are some loose terminals inside the fusebox; when I pulled out the headlight relay, one of the terminals in the fusebox was AWOL, probably shoved down into the housing. Groovy. I'll bet that has something to do with the marker light being on. It was late so I pulled the battery cable and left it. I'll pull the box open & see if I can sort it out tonight.

My repair to the center bearing got its final adjustment. Then I bored a pair of 3/16 holes 180' apart on the front of the bearing seal. I couldn't find my small grease needle and the needle I bought was a POS. So I filled a small syringe with 1 1/2 pumps of grease. I pumped that into the holes and repeated until grease was leaking out around the edges of the bearing seal. All the while working the bearing to circulate the grease. Then, I cleaned off the area with carb cleaner and a rag, I gave the holes a smear of RTV. I'm gonna test run the shaft before I re-install the cat back. I also have the tie rod and the rear brakes to contend with. I bought 2, 20 x 3/16" bubble flare brake lines and some pads. I have good TREs . Hopefully, I can find a set of UCAs with good ball joints so I can use Paul's uber bushings that I bought back in '11.

Got the fusebox squared away last night; no more always-on rear marker light.

Still got no brake lights though. No reverse lights either. I think the two are somehow related. One of these days I'll have everything working on this car.

Not so much to, but for... I picked up the b34 I bought and cleaned it up. Getting ready to start taking it apart and compiling parts for my turbo build.

Ripped open the AFM and adjusted & cleaned it. No more hiccup/dead spot when accelerating... it's like night and day

Finally got around to replacing two of the breather hoses, one from the boot that connects the AFM to the intake manifold, and another one that goes directly from the bottom of the intake manifold to the ICV. Also installed the rubber points that were meant to space the intake box from the valve cover, along with the bottom rubber at the base. Feeling so glad to drive it again!

Up next on the list is an oil + filter change, and then sometime in the future I'll have to be tackling the rear subframe bushings...

Friday included a much-needed wash and vacuum, as well as digging into the driver's seat to see why it's been a little crooked so long. A few clues found and a little straightening achieved, but more to be done...

Today, the cover came off and I replaced the trunk light and finally got a new glovebox handle installed. Little things, but stoked!

Now it's time to pull him out of the garage and get rumbling to dinner!

Ended up with $100 even minus the $30 to title it. I don't see myself doing that again for a looong time. Luckily, unlike Houston, the recycler is across town, 15 minutes away.

I keep saying I will sell my Yukon, but dang it's handy.

I too just took the last of the 535is carcass to the recycler...in a couple more pieces than yours David (I only have a 4x8 utility trailer and a Jetta for the task...)

On the '86 side...

Been slowly picking away at the 5-speed swap when I have a spare 30 mins here and there. I've got most of the stuff outta the way to take the trans out tomorrow, so I've got my buddy coming over and we're gonna take the auto out and probably have time to put the clutch in and maybe the G265. As much fun as it's been reading cek's 5-speed swap on the 528e, I'm taking things a bit slower...

Just for grins, I tried out my junkyard fixed-antenna build, and got it mounted in the car. The assembly is from a '91 Miata that I picked up to do on my '94 when the power antenna mast went out...I just ended up replacing the mast. It fit, and I took a couple of spare brackets I had laying around that just happened to be the approx. size I needed, and a couple of spare bolts from the junked 535is. Sealed the top with some silicone. Pretty sure there's another piece to the grommet on top, and I probably have it laying around, and then I'll do something about the radio connector, which is not the same. But it will at least solve the issues I had with reception with the old antenna, which didn't go up past the first extension. FWIW, I have an aftermarket radio already, so the antenna doesn't need to be powered anymore.

5 speed swap saga continues...

1) Got the driveshaft out
2) Removed the shift cable
3) Removed the bellhousing bolts
4) Swore some
5) Removed the last bellhousing bolt - necessitated a trip to Harbor Freight for a ridiculously long extension and a wobble socket.
6) Swore some more
7) Got the trans out

THEN

8) Got stymied by the torque converter bolts. Remember that we're working with a reman transmission, so whoever put the bolts back in at New Country BMW (yes, I have the invoice for the work that was done...) did a nice job of boogering 2 out of 3 of them. Not to mention, they were cranked down on pretty damn hard, so now I can't get them off. I started by running to Harbor Freight to get a set of offset wrenches, but offset makes it so they bottom against the flexplate instead of cranking down on the bolt. So, gotta return those. Next, a quick trip to MyE28 shows that this can be done with zero-offset wrenches. Despite my , I decided to try. Nope, remember those boogered and overtorqued bolts? Not even PB is loosening them to where I won't cause more damage.

So now, I'm stuck...gotta figure out a way to get this junk off, otherwise I'm hitchhiking to Ocean City in a couple weeks

I replaced the right tie rod with a good used set. I replaced the boots with some red ones from Auto Zone. I drilled the tops so I could grease them. Then Dis mounted the rear calipers and popped the pucks out. The RR brake line along the sub frame leaked when I barely tried to un screw it from the hose. NBD, I had a new lines. I got the right one installed and quit for the day . During the week, I'll clean up the rear calipers. The RR was stuck ,but I've developed a process to fix that.

Put in a new windshield. The old one must have been original. What a difference now, I'm seeing stuff that I never knew was there.

Gave her (or him? I don't know anymore) a wash, along with some quick detailing product (spray-on polish and wax). Then cleaned the interior, along with giving the leather some conditioner. However, the inside wasn't that dirty to begin with, aside from the underside of the carpets starting to peel and leaving all the black crap on my carpets. Might have to re-glue them eventually.

I can't wait for my ass to feel the friction against the seats because of the conditioner.

I think next on the list will be:
• Steering wheel swap to an M-Tech I
• Replacing some burnt out window switches
• Sourcing new HVAC - Current one has sun damage and finish is cracking.
• E28 M5 basketweaves - Figured that it's about time to get a proper wheel size, unlike the Style 42s I have on right now.

I wonder if I can design a cabin air filter... If it's even possible to put one in the car anywhere before the blower.

I replaced the LR subframe hard line Fought me all the way . But I got it done .

Installed rear main seal, flywheel, clutch, TOB, and transmission. Mocked up the mounts (no hardware...oops) and crossmember, and found out the shifter doesn't fit (G265, aluminum console). Will fab something at work tomorrow.

Actually it's only a mock-up, but the aluminum console is shortened - I just need the proper-length fasteners to tie everything down and figure out a rear mount situation...currently this is my rear support:



Mocked it up real quick and then had to jet to a rehearsal dinner - I don't have much time tomorrow due to the wedding we're attending tomorrow into Sunday, but there's gonna be another big push Sunday afternoon and into Monday to get the car ready!

The re-habbed rear calipers are ready to mount. The right one had seized slides. I pulled out the boots and the bores were loaded with rust. I think the rust was squeezing against the slide bolts. The first one, I attacked with a sanding drum on a Dremel. It was taking too long, I used an old 5/8 paddle bit in a drill. Didn't harm the drill because I used the sides of the paddle. I couldn't locate an 11/16 That may have worked better. Much faster. When I finished with the Dremel, I coated the boots with Sil Glyde and pushed them back in. The bolts slide much easier now.
