I started off the day with chrome trim that all looked like this:
Then i used a
shocking amount of Blue Tape:
By now, you should see where this is going...
And yes, I did the other side too!

Thanks.
It took a couple of hours, but, well worth it IMO.

No newspaper for masking? It helps to keep the overspray to a minimum, but a clay bar should take care of it.

It's plstidip. The overspray rubs right off with a lint free cloth and leaves no residue.

Took the valve cover off New Years eve, prepped it to paint it black that night (I know, its probably the best way anyone could ring in the new year), decided I'd rather just clear coat it since I thought it looked good as is, painted it this morning, got off work and installed it in the dark in my driveway.
Now it makes me want to do that to the rest of the engine bay, especially the intake manifold, since it all looks dirtier.

When I did that with the trim around my windshields, I thought I used enough paper... Then I looked at the roof and saw a lot of overspray. I thought that plastic dip was a PITA to get off.

For overspray, there are two methods for removal that have both worked for me in the past:
For heavy overspray, mask off a square around the affected area, then lay on a few coats (as if you are painting the area). Wait a few hors, or even a day or two, then peel it off.
For light "dusting" overspray, let dry for 15 minutes, then gently rub in a circular motion with a soft towel. It comes right off.
PlastiDip is pretty awesome. It drys and is ready for another coat in 15 minutes. After 7-10 days, it is "fully set" and will survive a high pressure car wash hose. Even after "fully set" you can peel it right off to change the look of your car. So long as you properly clean and prep the surface, it won't harm paint or chrome.

Does plastidip come in regular sized aerosol cans? I have been wanting to shadowline my car for a while, but haven't been able to decide between plasti and paint.

Yes, it does. It's as easy to use as paint, and non-permanent.

Tested my new toy. A milestone for the garage project! Now if I can only get the plumber back to finish the heat...

Disconnected the batteries on both the e28's and the M7 (I know it is not an e28 but it's pretty much adopted into this forum) and hooked the battery tenders up. Damn! I have got to get that garage built this year!

I've got an aftermarket AM/FM/CD in my car. It was installed when the OE AM/FM/Tape unit died. It works, but, there was always one thing that bothered me about it. ...The display. It's easy to read and clear, however, it seems to have been designed by the battleship searchlight department! It's distracting as shit at night, and it doesn't dim on the dimmer when you turn the headlamps on.
So, today, I set about a 5 minute fix for that:
Step 1 - Remove the face plate:
Step 2 - Pop the somvabitch open:
Step 3 - Spent an hour combing the carpet in your home office for the tiny spring that whizzed across the room during step 2.
Step 4 - Apply a layer of tinting film directly to the face of the OLED panel.
Step 5 - Reinstall.
Result: The display is now
juuuuust bright enough to see during the day, and should be perfect at night. No more bright blue searchlight on the dash!

I thought you were going to show us how you found the circuit that powered the OLED and put a resistor in to dim it. Cheater. (but nice work anyway).

Thanks! A) I didn't want to spend forever poking around the board (this literally took five minutes), and B) my ancient and dusty oscilloscope died when I moved and I haven't replaced it because good scopes are expensive as balls.

What car are those seats original to? They look fantastic.
Yesterday I spent about 6 hrs doing the following.
1. Installed new clutch pedal bracket with reinforcing piece. Old one was cracked to shit and had a shitty weld job.
2. Installed refurbished brake hydrobooster from JCS.
3. Installed master cylinder.
4. Replaced all power steering hoses with new lines and hose clamps.
By far and away the most frustrating was the hose job and installing the hard line that goes from the hydrobooster to the regulator. Absolutely hate working in that area of the car!

They are E34 sport seats. This pair was created out of two pairs. One from a US 540 Sport and one from an Irish (RHD) M5.
