Avoided combustion again by noticing a leak from the fuel pump/filter line while doing the rear brake pads.
At this rate I'll be pre-emotive lay replacing the rest of the lines, since the ones I have replaced are on the verge of exploding into bits anyway

Vlad: Pulled rear brakes and put caliper grease on to quell squeal when cold. Removed adjustable FPR and put in stock 3.0bar unit. Drove like hell and its fine. That IE AFPR just made me nervous.
Maytag: Boxed up BBS RZs to ship to refinished. Swapped in a new-used power antenna unit as old one finally croaked. Spent some time cleaning parts for the 3.25lsd.

Washed it. Drove it around the block for the first time in 2 months afterwards. Not sure why I don't drive it more often, it really puts a grin on my dial. Also trial fit the throttle adaptor plates, going to need to die grind the TBs a bit to port match them perfectly, may start on that soon. Engagement party/wedding planning is sucking the wallet dry at the moment so the engine build hasn't progressed past parts collection yet although I'm hoping to send the head off soon.

Finally took a look at and removed my power steering filter. It seems it was clogged and my pump has been screaming for a few days. At first I thought it was a hose issue but it was even simpler. Now no more noise but new hoses and filter are in order. Nothing like driveway repairs in the snow

Drove it home. My kid drove it to work a week or so ago and it died about a block from the shop, and wouldn't start again. I thought it was either the fuel pump -- it had been making some noise last summer -- or the fuel pump relay. I got new FP & main relays last week, so we drove out tonight, popped in the new relays, and it fired right up. Gotta love it when a plan comes together.

Changed the axle boots. The old ones were kind of crusty. Not a terrible job...the most frustrating thing for me was getting the boots on to the shaft without the lip folding over.

Just got back from a 12 hour round trip of driving my e28 to pick up some new style 5's for it. Even with the gas I burned this was still a great deal. Probably wasn't the best way to transport them though, but it worked.

Replaced the "lock strips" around the windshield and rear window; mine were browned from sun exposure and age. Until a few weeks ago I assumed these were aluminum pieces and would be both somewhat expensive and difficult to replace; I didn't know they were just plastic and readily available. It was amazingly easy and took less than 2 hours; one of those jobs you keep putting off but after you're done you wish you had done it much sooner. It's one of those little details that makes a big difference in the car's overall appearance.
Now I'm in the process of removing the old tint on my rear window; the goofball who installed it left a palm print in the adhesive that's always bothered me.

Got in it this morning, tried to start it, and it just kept whining. Popped the hood. Under the intake manifold was a puddle of gas. So I figured it was the CSV after looking on here. Decided I really didn't want to tackle the job, since its cold, (-11C according to the obc which reset itself) and no garage. Waited till it was warmer and got it cranked, and billows of white and blue smoke kept rolling out of the back of it (way more than would be expected in the cold). So shut it back down and now its headed to the mechanic on the back of a tow truck. Today has been a fun day.

Did some diagnostic stuff on the e28 today; youngest son drove it to school on Monday, and it died on him a block from his parking spot. For some reason he didn't appreciate having to push it that last block.
Anyhoo, it looks like my earlier diagnosis was faulty, and it's just a flaky fuel pump. Sometimes it works (like today) and sometimes it doesn't. Time to replace it I guess.

I can't remember what we
used to call them, but forevermore they will be known as "boopityboops". Forevermore.

Tried to drive it. Ran like poo. Swore a bit. Tried to fix it. Tried to drive it again; still ran like poo. Booked it in for a fixin'.

I suspect that's my issue as well. The car runs fine sometimes, and sometimes is terrible. As of today, it's mostly terrible. No power, stumbles burbles and farts under load.

It was nice and sunny today so I made yet another attempt at getting the musky/moldy smell out of Maytag's trunk.
Tons of bleach and elbow grease inside the trunk. Lots of P21 Total Auto Wash and elbow grease on the carpet pieces.
Then I sprayed the entire insides down with

Tomorrow I'm going to open a box of baking soda and leave it in there with one of these

I'm going to leave the carpets out in the sun all day tomorrow too.
