What did you do to your E28 today?
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Got in it this morning, tried to start it, and it just kept whining. Popped the hood. Under the intake manifold was a puddle of gas. So I figured it was the CSV after looking on here. Decided I really didn't want to tackle the job, since its cold, (-11C according to the obc which reset itself) and no garage. Waited till it was warmer and got it cranked, and billows of white and blue smoke kept rolling out of the back of it (way more than would be expected in the cold). So shut it back down and now its headed to the mechanic on the back of a tow truck. Today has been a fun day.

Did some diagnostic stuff on the e28 today; youngest son drove it to school on Monday, and it died on him a block from his parking spot. For some reason he didn't appreciate having to push it that last block.
Anyhoo, it looks like my earlier diagnosis was faulty, and it's just a flaky fuel pump. Sometimes it works (like today) and sometimes it doesn't. Time to replace it I guess.

I can't remember what we used to call them, but forevermore they will be known as "boopityboops". Forevermore.e28Sean wrote:Glad I could be of service!

Tried to drive it. Ran like poo. Swore a bit. Tried to fix it. Tried to drive it again; still ran like poo. Booked it in for a fixin'.
I suspect that's my issue as well. The car runs fine sometimes, and sometimes is terrible. As of today, it's mostly terrible. No power, stumbles burbles and farts under load.davintosh wrote:Anyhoo, it looks like my earlier diagnosis was faulty, and it's just a flaky fuel pump. Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
It was nice and sunny today so I made yet another attempt at getting the musky/moldy smell out of Maytag's trunk.
Tons of bleach and elbow grease inside the trunk. Lots of P21 Total Auto Wash and elbow grease on the carpet pieces.
Then I sprayed the entire insides down with http://www.amazon.com/Mold-Armor-Blocke ... B0017KE9OA
Tomorrow I'm going to open a box of baking soda and leave it in there with one of these http://www.amazon.com/DampRid-Hanging-M ... B002Q1190G.
I'm going to leave the carpets out in the sun all day tomorrow too.

Yesterday, I drove it really fast halfwayacross the State of Washington. I also reconsidered getting Euro headlights, as Jake D took a rock yesterday and had to replace a headlight.
Today I will drive back at normal speeds.

I was a bit rushed against the clock; so I didn't take any good shots. I was also busy trying to clean and make everything pretty.davintosh wrote:Wut, no pics of the shiny goods? Trimmed the oil return tube on the M20 to fit with the manifold still on.

Spring is tentatively here, well at least the snow is almost gone. So I fired both the 5's (and the 7) up for their Spring maintenance cycle to begin ASAP. The X5 is nice and all that but I miss my old cars.

Picked it up on Sunday....
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Well, technically it was the other day, but I replaced the 535's hydrobooster in-situ without disturbing brake or coolant lines. Simply drained and removed the ATF reservoir, disconnected the master and slid it out of the way, then unbolted the hydrobooster from inside the car. Really not a bad job at all. I also started the M5 for the first time in about 2 months on Monday. Fired right up and landed on a smooth, strong 1100rpm idle. After about 30 seconds she mellowed down to around 900 and life was good. So good.

Technically this was the past four days, but I did a head swap and now I have a nice minty B34 head with a hot cam in it. I love new head(s).
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Started off by replacing all of the vacuum lines, one of the fuel lines, and the windshield washer lines in the car.
Those BMW hose clamps are a real bitch to get off. So glad that they also got replaced.
Then since it was nice out, I went drive out in the country. First the car got angry and started having an intermittent misfire when I'd go over a bump.
After the misfire started, a lawn care truck, going the opposite way, decided to put a nice chunk of rock into my windshield, effectively retiring the windshield after 27 years of faithful service.
Took a look at the car this afternoon, figured out what the deal with the misfire was, finished putting in the vacuum line that goes from the bottom of the intake manifold to inside the cabin, and got a "quote" for my windshield. However, the quote was really just her telling me that she can no longer get any of the things I need to have the windshield done, and that it wasn't a repairable crack. So now I get to play where is my next windshield. Finally, the car surprised me by how much equipment it can fit in trunk.
Today has definitely been an interesting day.

Swapped on a special edition CCA badge for a change of pace.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
My M5 had an f'd up sunroof, broken plastic and torn liner when I bought it. Thanks to cek for the cables and TCD for the M5 liner. I spent a couple of nights trying to figure out how it goes back together and I think I got it. I need to lube and install the panel to fully test. Kind of excited about this repair.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Finished installing my New & Improved In-Tank Fuel Pump. I wasn't planning to do it today, but the e32 started acting up (alternator died) while I was out for lunch, so I drove it home, then finished up the install and drove the e28 back to work. It started on the first turn, and running fine. Love it when a plan comes together.
And I didn't smell gasoline all afternoon.
