What did you do to your E28 today?
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Welded my new euro tail panel on a few days ago. Today I mostly just hated the car. I really would like a nice newer car.

Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Went to eat lunch with my brother after filling the car up.
When we got done I noticed this and a strong smell of gasoline.
Investigated it little bit and realized the bottom hose was causing it.
So I figured I'd replace all the lines at once since I was in there. (and yeah my trunk needs to be cleaned)
After finishing that, my other brother wanted to figure out if we could put his long board in my ski rack since he wants to bring it to the beach. It worked. So all in all it was a good day.

Diagnosed a substantial coolant leak - gooseneck on the back of the head onto the exhaust. Fun times ahead.

Picked up the 3rd diesel.

I bought it! I've been yearning for an e28 for a number of years now but finally found one that ticked all the boxes without being unreasonably expensive.

Replaced a leaky auto-trans cooler line (the upper one).
Also just moved back to LA full-time so I had to buy a couch and a desk. No pic of the desk, but I drove all across town with this couch on the rack no problem
Of course Western ave is a piece of shit so I was worried it was gonna bounce off or tip but I had it secure. The lady I bought it from threw in a C-Stand and two 14' rolls of gel (red and blue) gotta love Hollywood.
Dog is thrilled

Installed E90 drop hats over the weekend; after contemplating the design differences I removed the small ring in the middle. They work juuust fine. Combined with very recent H&R springs, Bilstein HD's and new shock mounts the ride height is right where I was hoping it would be when the suspension was redone last year.
Took an extra few hours to clean and paint the strut tubes and brake dust shields while they were out as well. The drain hole for the lower spring perch on the driver side was plugged solid.
Topped off this good deed with an oil change, coolant flush, wax, reinstallation of the charcoal canister system and a proper install of some premium rear speakers. Oh- and finally installed some minty inner rear door seals that have been lingering for over a year. Next stop, 5'er West.

Pulled out the eta and destoryed my condenser. Then we took apart our free Getrag 260/6 to find that the intermediate shaft bearing had magically dissapeared and turned into fairy(metal) dust. When we went order the new one and the main shaft we found out that the main bearing we had didnt match upto Real Oem or BMW South Atlanta's bearing. It did match upto a Getrag 260/5 . So we went to take apart the G260/5 we couldnt, bc the shaft has varnished on(thats what she said) and we have to make a special tool.
So to sum it up:
Magic

Dad's 524 would literally scream when you accelerated. Had a nasty boost leak. Took it to the shop and smoked it and confirmed it was the intake gasket. PO had reused it at some point. So, replaced that, swapped out the leaking silicon injector return lines for some nice, OE cloth wrapped hose and BOOM! She drive's like a new car! Amazing what a difference a boost leak can make.
Then we got some Bojangles because Bojangles is tha' shizz.

Scooter made a new friend yesterday.

I fitted a pair of UCAs with Moosehead UCABs. I did it in air conditioned splendor in my cave. I set the new bushings and tapped carefully until the set screw bore cleared the arm.

Bojangles is one of the things I miss most about living in the Atlantic SE coast. If those seasoned fries could be ordered over the internet I would totally do it!

Drive the ever-lovin' snot out of the M535i today: total of about 11 hours behind the wheel from Medford, OR to Los Angeles, CA.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Drove the 528e to its new home, with a tear in my eye. My eldest son is taking ownership of it, and I'm confident it's in good hands.

Snob's Sanden 508 arrived yesterday afternoon.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Took the m5 to the dealership for a free wash while purchasing all new window weatherstripping for all 4 doors. Enjoyed a spirited drive in beautiful San Diego weather
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
I'm not really a frugal person, but I gotta ask: Why in the eff would you buy parts like that from a stealer? You can save 30-50% in my experience by ordering OE parts from places like blunttech.com, even with shipping.socalM5 wrote:Took the m5 to the dealership for a free wash while purchasing all new window weatherstripping for all 4 doors. Removed this urethane steering coupler and replaced it with a stock rubber unit. The urethane didn't add any steering responsiveness but did add steering squeak. For $20 you too can try this experiment, but I recommend not.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
I ran one of those in my 535is for quite a while and never noticed the squeaking. Of course, I haven't put it in any of the other cars. Those parts I think are more useful in the early cars like E12s, etc where the rubber coupler is under the hood instead of under the dash.
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
The squeaking wasn't horrible, just a little chatty getting in and out of parking lots etc. It was like a grumpy bastard in the dash announcing to your passengers that this is a 35 year old jalopy. It had to go!
Re: What did you do to your E28 today?
Speaking of squeaking, my M5 is a loud bastard. Today, I gummi-pfleged the door seals and re-wrapped the strikers with more electrical tape, but it's still terrible. Any recommendations?

I was hoping that was not what you would find. It is not an unknown problem. Do you know anyone competent with a TIG welder?kronus wrote:They're cracking off the roof..
