Removed Driveshaft..to find i need a new one!

I'm aware of the unserviceable/semi-serviceable staked in ujoints.

Shaft is currently out of "Elaine" and had been replaced by oceanside driveline a few years back..my CSB was completely trashed recently so i replaced it with a new one only to have the same metal squeak and driveshaft rubbing issue. Removed the shaft today and found the yoke/ujoint connect was completely sheared off..allowing that end of the ujoint to come out of its home and mess up the angle of the shaft..which in turn caused it to rub on the under body.

Anyway If anyone has a decent shaft laying around and wants to get rid of it pm me.

Thanks. -

Sat morning I went to a junk yard that had a couple of e28s. I unfortunately found out about this 30+ days too late and of course as I had expected both had been gutted out drastically by the time I got to them. But since my car is no garage queen I still managed to find a couple of things for my car out of the gutted ones..

I brought with me a stereo (my stereo's volume knob is messed up and its hard to control the volume, it was annoying as hell and I had been wanting to swap it... And yes I am totally ok with the original bmw car sound system), I also found a kidney in much better shape than mine believe it or not (both cars at the junk yard were 88s and mine is an 84, my kidney is made out of cheap aluminum unlike the newer ones)... I have also read on this forum the aftermarket sunroof water seals suck so I brought with me one of the two at the junk yard to save it for when I paint the car.. I also needed a moulding for the rear left side so I got that as well...

Ok so what did I do to my e28 today? I swapped the stereo (i tested the thing out and worked perfectly!), the door moulding and the kidney... Out of these things, at least for me, the most exciting thing was to see how much better the "new" kidney looked than the older one.. Of course I cleaned it nicely throughout before installing and that made a lot of difference...

Here's my original kidney:

pretty sad..

here's the new one:

a world of difference :D

Here's the stereo swap picture, the PO had a wire mess...

By all means, but I must say it had a few dents... not only that, the one I bought from the junk yard had the black plastic piece broken so I stripped it from the older and it got bent a little more... But sure, let me know if still interested so I can set it aside.

Sat in mine today. Started it. Warmed up. Shut off.

Can't drive due to a busted spring perch in front due to rust. New strut housing came in last week, just need to set aside time to replace. Then need to get a replacement tire as the inside wall is pretty torn up despite not having gone through yet.

I drive it everyday. One thing I haven't done since bringing it out in March or April is wash it. :( It's feeling quite neglected...

I'm double posting because it's a different day!!! And I finally washed the damn thing. Now my paint looks wayyy tired. Dry, faded, ugly. Fantastic. Now I need to clay bar, compound, wax, and seal. Fack.

Aluminum kidneys on an E28? That's weird! Could it be that someone adapted the late E23 kidneys (Aluminum) to the E28 plastic frame?

I let my woman use it all day while I was at work. It was difficult but we got through it.

I was hoping that was not what you would find. It is not an unknown problem. Do you know anyone competent with a TIG welder?
Yup, looks like a fun thing to fix. I guess a decade of ground controls will do that.

No idea to be honest but it looked it belonged there.. I would imagine the earlier cars came with it...

Maybe Chris can confirm this...

Just finished the complete AC install to my originally non-AC car. Never again. It is a hard way to learn, that the non-AC cars have shorter heater box bowden cables, the holes are not perforated in the body for the evaporator...

But it is working now. While I was there, the seat heating was also installed. The actuator buttons have been relocated to centre console, only some soldering was needed.

Did some front end work along with H&R springs. Replaced tie rods, lower control arms, swaybar links, strut mounts and new Billy HDs. Also upgraded brakes to e34 calipers/rotors. She sits nice now. On to find the 16" wheels I want to add by Labor day.

I guess this is as good a place as any to bitch about modern BMWs that I really am disappointed with (except the i3 and i8, which I finally understand)...

So I got out the WD-40 *and* the HHS-K to spray the shit out of my rear U-joint because I'm still debating whether I will replace my drive-shaft myself or let a mechanic replace it on a lift. I have to spray it because it makes a lot of noise and there is some shudder at low (less than 25mph) speeds. And the part (26 11 1 225 461), with guibo and CSB I guess I will need too, is ~$800.

I still gotta do my timing belt. I think I'll order the Service II parts this week. I'm almost on borrowed time now and should really do it ASAP, or as soon as my stupid E39 is "reliable" once again (an elusive concept I'm starting to realize since it leaks everything out its plastic bullshit).

In the meantime, I'm cleaning the shit out of the bottom of the E39 to isolate whether it is leaking from the 2 year old OEM radiator, or from one of the new piece-of-shit hoses connecting to it. So far this is all I got (please excuse the grunt as I got back on the ground LOL):

Spent Saturday welding together new exhaust tips. I picked up some radar feedhorns out of the junk pile at work and they had the perfect rocket shape for exhaust tips. Any bigger though and it might border on rice. Interestingly enough, the new tips are quite a bit quieter than the "stock" Billy Boat tips - maybe all the sound is now blasting the guy behind me!

Replaced the ignition switch, which was easier then expected once I got the right (euro) part. Tip: do not drop that microscopic set screw!

I took the super eta off the blocks after work.today. I drove it down town. It goes pretty good. The re-vamped Boysen exhaust is quiet and seems to have fixed the ragged performance. The front end tracks pretty well with my guess-timated tie rod-ectomy. I dont have any judder in Paul's Spherical UCABs .so I did OK setting those into a used set of arms.too I have used 3 sets of day glow orange poly boots. That is all I could find in Auto Zone. I replaced the left LCA with a better one. I drilled a hole in the cover of each joint and pumped it full of chassis lube. Instead of installing Zerks, I just plugged the holes with a dab of RTV.
