Wow, how cool is that?
I didn't know the Amish were allowed to drive M5s.

Wow the gals wear some short skirts in Houston… is the water that high??
Pavie, you were a bow tie way from being mistaken as a server.
Great job on your displaying your rides. Classy.

It's so windy in Oklahoma, the gals can't afford to wear skirts.

When a new BMW dealership is opened and the best stuff inside it is from 25 or more years ago, surely that's not a good sign...
Overall my favorite was the E9 Taiga 3.0 CSi.

Nice pics and recognition! I LOL'd at the Amish comment.
Re: Living with a Legend ///M5: Year Three 6/16/15
Before the end of the Old Year 2015, I decided to start my latest project.
Pulled the engine with the transmission. My 2-ton hoist did great. One mistake on my side was that I should have removed the AC condenser.
Here is a shot of the engine on the stand and its replacement from 2791695.
The replacement engine has gotten a new chain, guides, S52 tensioner, B36 cam on the intake side, A100 gear on advance, euro headers. And 96k miles on the clock. The matching cluster is going into the car. The engine was originally sold by TCD to rollcenter, and then it landed in my hands after I sold my E39 M5 to rollcenter.
I am currently in the process of moving all the bits and pieces from the original motor over to the donor.
Stay tuned....

Re: Living with a Legend ///M5: Year Three 1/2/16
Why aren't you rebuilding and keeping the original motor?
Re: Living with a Legend ///M5: Year Three 1/2/16
Thats exactly the plan. Original motor (currently at 220k miles) is going through a ground up rebuild. The replacement is for the meantime (which will be a year or two).
Re: Living with a Legend ///M5: Year Three 6/16/15
Sorry for the potential thread-jack, but anyone know the PN of that heat shield on the pass side of the engine bay? I couldn't find it on RealOEM for an M5. I've never noticed that before and have been considering something similar for my S54 project.Pavel wrote:
Also, Pavel, I expect you'll make that engine bay spotless before installing the motor, right? Just making sure.

That's not much time!
Re: Living with a Legend ///M5: Year Three 1/2/16
Last day before going back to work was busy.
I got the originally motor stripped from all the auxilaries and put on the storage stand. The replacement went on the other stand and I started my progress of reassembly. I believe I got everything I need to finish the job.

Re: Living with a Legend ///M5: Year Three 1/2/16
I was able to get some progress done!
The engine is pretty much ready to go back in. I have to work on the transmission - seals, clean up.
Not going to install the AC compressor right now. Planning on refreshing the whole system next. I believe R12 is the choice of refrigerant.

Re: Living with a Legend ///M5: Year Three 1/2/16
Well in the preparation of another February 9th, I am still putting the car together. Yay 3-year anniversary with the M5!
Last week was days off week from work, so I was able to catch up a bit.
I started with the steering box mount. It was cracked on the outside, or so I thought. Once I removed the bolt, it literally broke off on the other side, and was showing clear cracking through out.
So I went ahead and got creative. This was my first serious welding project, so bare with me. I build the mount from a flat piece, a little bit of hammering on the vice.
Also I pulled my injectors and sent them for rebuild
I am about to mate the engine and the transmission back together and hopefully drop all that back in the car by end of week.

The injector results are here.

#4 was a little weak as you can see. MEPEH did a good job, and communication was very easy. The package should be at my doorsteps pretty soon. All set and done $55ish dollars with sending them to CA.
Last night, I was able to wrap up with the underside - guibo, drivershaft, shifter console, sway bar, transmission mounts.
I can see the neon light at the end of the tunnel.

Almost there. Last night, I was able to finally muscle in the cats back in. After some significant rework, I was amazed they fit from the first time.
All that left is harmonic balancer, new belts, radiator, intake, fluids.

Excited for you!
Re: Living with a Legend ///M5: Year Three 1/2/16
I'll be down there over Easter next month. Hopefully I can see the "finished" project!
Re: Living with a Legend ///M5: Year Three 1/2/16
All the fluids are in. I should fire it up tonight. All that is left to install, fingers cross all is good, are the hood, front and rear strut towers and the skid plate (and the windshield washer fluid reservoir).
And then from tomorrow on DD duties. First things first are inspection and registration renewal. This will be the best birthday present
Re: Living with a Legend ///M5: Year Three 2/29/16
IT'S ALIVE!
First day of DD duties. The engine fired up right away, on Friday! This was a pretty exciting moment. I was slightly nervous after all the work done to it, if I have not messed something up. This was my first ever engine refresh. The chain rattle was nerve-racking but after a good 10 minutes idle-ing it started going away, as expected. I still have a slight rattling noise, which I believe might be a loose heatshield or probably exhaust leak somewhere in the area of my homemade welded flanges from the cats to the headers. The sound mostly goes away after the car gets moving. I can still hear it when at idle at a traffic light.
I still kick myself for not buying Supersprint track pipes in November, when TMS had them on sale in the mid $200..
The list of improvements goes like that:
- ~96k miles S38B35 + Matching Cluster
- S38B36 cam on the intake side
- A100 gear set on Advance, paired with Jim Conforti
- M88 headers
- Valve Adjustment
- New Chain
- New Guides
- New S52 tensioner
- New Throwout bearing
- Reconditioned Injectors
- All gaskets/seals/o-rings on the engine replaced - minus HG.
- Some auxiliary hoses
From the date of delivery of the engine it took me almost 10 months to finish this project. Took me a few months to accumulate all the parts, and reading all the little details of how am I going to achieve this end result. Thanks goes to all the people that have contributed to this community and the yahoo group with their S38 knowledge. To name a few of the guys that I talked to directly - Phil Conrad, Doug Park, Dean Caccavo. Of course Sherman with having me work on his S38B36 earlier in 2015, and all the other numerous tips and tricks he has taught me.
Next project - get my AC working. Going to keep it R12.
And get on with the 745i...

So cool. Congrats. You must have the most expensive/cheapest M5 by now.
