A spoiler FAQ. It is all pictures, dial-uppers go for coffee

Post by Lotus72D »

Well not really because most of this is for the lower front of the car and those are Air Dams. But there are side skirts, rear aprons and some spoilers.

An air dam is defined on the web as "A front spoiler mounted beneath the bumper and shaped to reduce the airflow under the car. Air dams can increase the airflow to radiators, reduce aerodynamic drag, and/or reduce lift," and from the same site, a spoiler is "An aerodynamic device that changes the direction of airflow in order to reduce lift or aerodynamic drag and/or improve engine cooling. A front spoiler is technically an "air dam" because it prevents air from getting under the car and increasing drag."

E28 Aerodynamics:

The US M5/535is air dam from twest:

It is a BBS/BMW unit, NLA, except by lucky finds. TT had a set a coupe years ago. It is this one:

Here is a detail pic of the front corner:

This is what the air dam looks like on a US bumpered car. This image from a BMW accessories catalog.
Image

The rest of the 'kit' had these parts.
Image

And that catalog had this rear spoiler in it.

Here is a close-up of the side skirts and rear valance, along with another BMW air dam for the car.

A BBS specific rear apron sold on the bay in Sept 2005 for $510, here are pics of that unit:

and

Zender had these parts available So if you want to know what the ZENDER looks like this is it!!!

This is the Zender side skirt on a dirty car.

Alpina had an air dam that would do a fine job during a light snow fall. This indicating that it would push the snow, ah air out of the way instead of letting it go under the car. (Thanks Ted in T.O. for the link to this one) Image

I'll try to find more, including the Hartge air dam and post them as no one seems to be posting any pics of aero stuff for the cars. Well I did find the Hartge stuff and here it is:
Image
Image
Image
Image

As you can see, Hartge had two different rear spoilers, the polyurethane one and a wing that is painted like the car. The red car also shows the side skirts. Both air dams are without the cooling ducts that are in the center of the dam. These are similar to the ones in the 'is' air dam, except there are only two, one on each side of the center. These openings are in addition to the pairs of openings where the 'is' air dam would have the fog lights.

Lotus, this is most excellent! You did a great job. I can get a photo of my Bbs rear spoiler to you this weekend when I can take a picture.
I'm finding some others on ebay as well so I'll get whatever I can from there and get them to you as well.

I found these guys over in the UK racing e28's. They sell the rear wings, front airdams, front fenders, wheel arches, etc.

I've been contemplating on putting an air dam on my car for a little while now. Since my 86 535i is lowered I was wondering if all of these examples are the same height. If not, does anyone have the dimensions of each one?

Thanks.

Great thread!

I especially like the painted rear Zender trunk spoiler.

Wonder how much it'd cost to import the zaprace kit on the yellow e28 on their website.

Quite right, Tammer. I looked too quickly. Thanks for the correction.

The car above is mine -- I think it's just the stock "is" air damn but I'm a noob and I'm not sure.

I'm sure I could figure it out with some relatively simple research but I thought I'd post anyway.

Re the clear/white lenses - I bought the car with them on there - I don't mind the look but will probably replace them with stock someday. :? :?

"[Will] you guys edit it to make your posts work?"

You can. Here's how: Go into the "Edit" screen and uncheck the "Disable HTML in this post" box. If you have any hard returns (<B> or <P>), you'll need to do them manually.

Thanks for the update on that. I'm sure before you posted there were some that could not. Now they can. Let's hope they will.

No pics of the M-tech kit front end, or the Erebuni knockoff of the same item?

Someone's bound to ask!

no one has listed this spoiler yet:

I am currently adding this one in place of the IS spoiler the car used to have.

word on the street (and by street, I mean from Brian) is that that spoiler is no longer available from BMW new. This a recent development.

That's it. Usually, they are black though. They were consistently fitted to RoW M5's in that form. It was also available in a ductless form and optionally fitted to lesser E28's, and that form is even rarer.

does anyone have a better pic of the Zender front airdam? I found one for sale but it looks more like the BBS style in the pics above. It appears that the BBS and Zender are similar but the zender purtrudes further at the bottom than the BBS?
