Duplicate Posts

Post by rodpaine »

Is there an issue with Macs/Safari 5.1.x and duplicate posts? I see that I have had this problem several times recently and have not done anything differently while submitting a forum post. Why is a duplicate showing up?

I think it has more to do with your connection. I know most of mine show up when my connection is intermittent or poor - like when I'm using my phone. I use no Apple operating systems or browsers.

C.R.,
Yes, I agree that connection problems, especially intermittent ones, are often caused by telephone use (in the case of DSL) and weather (in the case of Wi-Fi). However, in my case I am involved in monitoring my two connections daily (DSL and Wi-Fi) and have had no problems at the times I've experienced duplicate posts to MyE28.com forums.

It appears that the issue is with Safari, which has a number reports from other Mac users about intermittent pauses and stumbles during use, which has caused various problems. I have never experienced problems here with Google Chrome, on both my PCs and Macs, even though they are developer/beta versions of Chrome. I'll simply stick with Chrome, from this point on.

Would be nice, however, if message authors had the option to delete their own postings, so I could get rid of my double postings, should they occur.

Rod, I'm fairly certain you can delete your own posts.

Go to the page you posted on and look at your post.
There should be a small 'X' button on the top right of your "post box."

Correct. As long as the post you want to delete is the last one in the thread, you can delete it. I've even deleted two out a triple post, one at a time. The author of the last post in the thread can always delete it.

Rod-

As far as web browsers are concerned, Safari is one of the worst ones available. Give Chrome or FireFox a try. They are both more standards compliant and better browsers in general than Safari.

Jeremy,
Yup, Safari has been a big dissapointment, but not quite as bad as IE6 - IE8 which are terrible. IE9 on the PC is greatly improved, but I prefer Chrome, currently running a developer version. I run all popular PC and Mac web browsers, as I note here on my web site, shown for Mac use, to insure my web site doesn't have code that breaks or upsets one of them.

Paul, C.R.,
Thanks for that operating tip. Never noticed that little 'X' before... because it doesn't appear in any of my PC or Mac browsers! I just logged on with each one and the 'X' does appear in any of my posted messages, duplicate or not. Why not? Paul, what OS and web browser are you running, that shows it in your screen capture?

EDIT - The 'X' now appears in this post, but is not seen in this earlier post http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?p=982228#982228 It only appears during the current session and is not available at a later time. That is how it is appearing to me.

EDIT 2 - The 'X' box is now appearing in ALL of my web browsers, PC and Mac, for this message. Must be date/time related. I'll see.

EDIT 3 - The 'X' box is now gone, so the period of time to use it is fairly short. I can see that this would keep you busy.

It's either time related or "views" related. I'm not entirely sure which it is, but you're correct in that it doesn't stay available indefinitely. If you need a multi-post error corrected and can't do it yourself, feel free to PM a Beamter about it. We try to correct them as we go, but as I've mentioned before, we don't necessarily catch everything.
