Green e28? Is this real?

Post by Lucas_Roehr »

I have done a fair amount of searching and come up empty handed. Is this a factory color? My immediate thoughts are no. Anyone know about this thing?

No US spec e28 came in green AFAIK (but I've been wrong before), I know a few green colors were sold overseas though.

I saw that on CL a couple days ago and I was just shocked.

Such a hideous color IMO

looks good

I like it. Next to the tail lamp colors it contrasts nicely.
Looks more appropriate than if someone would have painted one a later factory green variant.

It's pretty terrible, if you ask me. But it has some things going for it besides the terribleness. It has the correct California license plate for the model year, it is an m30 powered manual shift e28, and it is close to the right price range to make a deal. I also noticed it has an eta cluster (or at least tach), and recognize the shop on the plate frames to do some service history investigating. But what do you do with the paint?

Look at it! Colors aren't always as they appear on a CL ad. To my eyes it needs to be a shade or two darker and it would be fine, think British Racing Green. On the other hand, it doesn't appear to be anywhere near lime green or something awful like that. In person the color might be ok, downright scarey or great, to me it's that close.

Nothing an afternoon with some masking tape, newspaper and $10 worth of SEM trim black couldn't correct. To each his own, but I'd much rather have a mediocre repaint in an incorrect color (as long as it didn't make me scream in pain, think baby blue or lime green) than clearcoat that was failing when Clinton was in office and is now down to primer in spots and rust on some of the edges. On a $1500 car that's 30 years old, shinny paint is a bonus, original or not.

Fair enough, true quote from the ad "Others will say this but this is the real deal, the rarest BMW you'll find."

Far rarer than any other model. He clearly says it's the real deal. You aren't doubting him, are you?

it looks like agave, a relatively common color for 2002s... maybe not, but that's pretty damn close.

Definitely not Agave! Looks more like the color you'd get from Earl Scheib whether you asked for "blue" or "green."

It has a 533i steering wheel. I believe it is probably a 533i. Maybe not...

Since this is the rarest BMW we'll find, and it's only $1500, I'm going to have to start looking for sub $1500 3.0 CSLs!

What is even funnier is that I think my girlfriend saw you driving through Folsom. She sent me a text that said, "I saw a green 533i and thought of you."

I assume this was you because I don't thing there are many green 533i 's out there. Also, does it have Shatz and Krum license plate frames on it? It looked like them in the picture...

Yes I bought it in Folsom....I probably pushed it a little too hard, ergo my situation but when I finish I will have a complete unbumped, all the parts with all suspension done. And maybe a paint job!!!
Yes lic plate is the same!

I am not sure what you mean by push it too hard, but these motors will typically take some very heavy abuse. I wonder what actually failed. My guess is a rocker arm failure, which would mean it is a great parts engine.

It was not driven very much the past few years...I felt it was pretty strong and ran it around 75 all the way to napa...just outside of Napa, it felt rough...checked compression 2 and 3 cyls...5-25 pressure. rest were good. Took valve cover off everything moved right. It was strong. Had a beautiful black one a few years ago, ran the crap out of it...no problems, Missed it ever since...had Mercedes wagon, Nissan Titan, MB 300sel, Saab 900 turbo(nice car) but never got over the 533i

Sorry, must have teared up!
