I began with a leaking shaft seal and ordered the p/s rebuilt kit (seals) from steve h. I replaced the shaft seal, and the two odd "h-shaped" seals inside the pump. this went well, but I believe I did something foolish (that's fairly normal for me) while taking it apart to clean it. I removed the small clip on the backside that holds the spring-loaded dildo thing in place. I put it back together the way it came out, but now my pump is noisy and it gets really hot. I only ran it for a maximum of 15 mins or so, but I think I may have screwed it up.

does anyone know anything about the spring-loaded dildo, it's function and what I may have fucked up during the rebuild?

TIA,
Jacob

additional question; do I need to prime the pump somehow?

The pump gets hot due to friction which the fluid should reduce so there are some clearances that are incorrect in the rebuild. The pump has a flooded suction so a primp should not be necessary.
