My 85 535i has a sweet spot at 60 mph and 105mhp. 105 is actually very nice but.
15 wheels.
Makes me think there are some frequency issues with balance and such since they are about 1x and 2x.

No spot to really speak of other than 3rd gear. Its my fav. When I hit 3rd around 3k....its on!! Of course the 3.73 Lsd helps. However 70-100mph is very strong.

Mine just gets smoother as speed climbs about 90. Will cruise all day at a buck10.

80mph (80 is usually the fastest I go) and up, its loud turning 3500+ RPM with a B&B system and no cats. As for a sweet gear, with the close ratio dogleg and a 3.25lsd 1st gear is almost nonexistant, 2nd is spinning, and it pulls really well in 3rd, 4th and 5th.

My 83/533i loves 2500 rpm in 5th gear (70 mph). The engine has a humming or resonating sound to it. I know it sounds korny but it almost sounds like the engine is happy to be out on the open road!!! I also love full throttle in 2nd gear at 2500 rpm's and up. the engine really comes to life and pulls hard up to redline. I know it's not an M5 but for a high mileage car that is 22 years old and basically stock, I have no complaints!!!

Any gear, as long as the 3.5 is up on cam. These things just sing!
BMWJustin, is your 666csi the one in Matt McGinn's shop? He sent me some pics a couple weeks ago, after I bought my Euro 635. That is going to be a sweet ride!

All my Bimmers like 80 mph, even my non-enthusiast wife noticed this. Her e39 gets better mileage at 80 than 60.
The 325i gets better mileage at 80 than 70 according to the meter and computer, same for the 535is.

We talked about this in dept at SE Sharkfest last year, how these cars really seem to settle down and run smoother at just a little over 80, say 82.
My euro six with dogleg and 3.07 rear gear really seems to like 78, wind noise quietens down, stebro exhaust doesn't hum too much. It'll almost put you to sleep.

Every 6 cyl BMW I've owned just hums at 80-90 mph. In my 323i with uncorked exhaust, that is the quietest it runs -- you can talk in a normal tone.
When I picked up the Franken5 I cruised across southern Wyoming at 100 most of the time. The car ran good, but I still get a cold flash when I think about the chain tensioner rail and piston being FU'd the whole time... :~

80 for me. Faster is better but easier to get caught.

Ain't that the truth, Rick.
When Linda and I were in Montana the first summer we had her e39, we were ticketed there. Keep in mind that I had the cruise control set on 105 and the GPS said 107. It went like this;
Montana Highway Patrol; "Sir, I clocked you at 105, but I'm going to write a ticket for just 100."~0
fastpat; "Ok, how much is that going to be officer?"!@#$
MHP; "Sir, that'll be $75.00, if I wrote it for 105, it'd go clear to $100.00.
Fastpat@; "OK, officer, do your duty."
The car is very smooth and safe at 100+.

Mine is 75 mph. I'd like to say that my sweet spot is somewhere closer to 100, but the Oregon DMV gave me two options. 1. Stop speeding, or 2. Buy a Valentine One. Since I had already spent several hundred dollars in speeding tickets, option two was out of the question. Basically I got a restriction notice saying that another ticket will remove my driving priveleges for 1 month. :@ Apparently thats the standard treatment for anyone getting 3 "driver improvement" violations in an 18 month period. That includes most things except fix-it tickets.

Al Canuck, yep thats it, 3 years in the making. It should be on the road in about a month. If you have seen pics of Matts work, you can tell he's a real craftsman.

I live clear across the continent, so I have not seen Matt's work up close and personal. Having said that, I'm very active in the 2002 community, as is Matt. I've seen his work on the 02 boards over the past few years. I have ZERO doubt that your car will be a sweet heart. If you have any more pics, I would LOVE to see them. You could email me if you wanted to.

On the Interstate -- Around 85mph for me.... 5th gear. Just cruises there. Easy enough to drop in to 4th in-case I run up behind any left-lane "my wheels are fuglier than my car" ricers!

My 84 533i hits a sweet spot around 2500 to 3000 in second, and 3000 and 3500 in fourth, you can feel the power dial in. I haven't a road to pursue fifth gear to find its spot. My car has 270,000 miles on the cliker, and when it's opened up you would never know it.

I roll in a 86 535i and a 528e. The 535i likes 100, the 528e 110. I balance my own tires down to the gram, and the front and rear suspension on both cars is perfect, so high speed is best.
