It is known that changing manual transmission lube to Redline MTL tends to result in a singing noise from the transmission.

Is there a way to reduce this singing noise? I think that I have read posts suggesting a mix with another lube, but can anyone testify to a known case?

what do you mean by singing? Do you mean more gear noise? Isn't that an indication of less lube actually doing it's job on your gears?

I have noticed a sound difference. I am not sure if it is the transmission or my perception.

Regarding Threeshifter's noise, most likely NOT your imagination. Changing to Redline does put a little tranny music in the cabin for you. I guess it's better than sluggish shifting in cold weather, tho.

I have read several posts that mention a singing noise (or rather a difference in noise) after changing to redline MTL. I just changed my transmission lube from unknown to Redline 70W-80 MTL and have noticed what I would describe as a singing. The noise that I hear is a little a vacuum leak sound but is independent of engine speed. Could be that the noise is always there but a slight change in pitch makes it more noticeable.

Does more noise mean less lube? I do not know. Ones first intuitive reaction would suggest yes, but there are many who seem to swear by this stuff. I do not know enough about lubrication and gear trains to fully answer that question.

May be a good question for a redline tech service person if they exist.

Where can you even buy redline fluids by the gallon? Would it be any cheaper, cause I see they sell the pump on bavauto, but, not the gallon sized container?

I can't remember where I bought MTL in the gallon container, but it's been enough to refill three transmissions with some left over. I bought the diff juice in quarts though.

The more consistent chain length of the oil in a synthetic will mean there is less of the longer chain molecules compared to the dino oils. This means the syn will not have the noise dampening qualities of the dino oil, but we all know it will protect better than the dino oil. Who posted that for the older trannies, Carl Nelson recommends mixing the MTL with the 75W90 in a 50/50 ratio? Can hurt and may decrease the 'noise'

I have had a whine in my M3 (has a getrag 265) but it sounds more like diff noise. I have urathane subframe bushings and it has been a problem since installing them.
I usually mis MTL with 75w90 redline to achieve a better shift feel with less noise. In my diff I have tried using 75w90 redline, now I have 75w140NS redline in there and its still loud as hell on the highway (loud, high pitched whine/hum noise).
Just my input, if valuable to anyone here...

I have personally used redline products at the repair facility that I work at and since we have started using them, we have had a lot of come backs due to noise. So many in fact that we no longer use the products anymore. I just haven't seen anything of theirs that I really like. I personally use mobil 1 full synthetic gear oil or valvoline semi synthetic and love the stuff.
