Well gentleman The Vintage and Rolling the Twisties 2012 were once again an incredible experience for me. The people that come together for these events are some of the best people I've ever met. And the camaraderie is just unbelievable. From getting Brian to the event, Andrew's E9's alternator to the parts relay on Sunday night / Monday morning to keep Cousin Billy's white 535is on the road this group never ceases to amaze me at their generosity. And that's not even all the repairs that took place- there was also a rebuilding of a headgasket and a few other things that I'm forgetting at the moment.

The Vintage 2012

Day One- Thursday May 24th 2012.

I somehow managed to get everything I needed into the trunk of Heinz except for my cooler, which sat behind the passenger seat.



I set off on my journey to Winston-Salem and also found that there is a road named after me...



I arrived very early at The Hawthorne and was able to check-in, despite that our room was under Hunter's name. After I settled in I hung out with RoyW in the parking lot and we were the first on Thursday to crack a few beers open and talk cars. Roy actually drove a car down, which is rare because he normally trailers it. And of course there were a few incidents on his trip down which he relayed to me, and his new Euro ///M6 is a beautiful car.





We then proceeded over to the Mexican restaurant and took over the back room, I had a good meal with Roy and Mike Gray (sp?).

Upon returning to the parking lot I discovered that quite a few more people had arrived, and the libations continued.



Even the Canadians eventually made it...



We pretty much hung out in the parking lot until probably sometime around 1am just hanging out and having a great time. I probably would have stayed up later however I wanted to be coherent for the festivities planned on Friday...

The Vintage 2012

Day Two- Friday May 25th, 2012.

I awoke as late as I could to shower and make it down to the caravan to the drag strip. Its really cool to see this in your rearview mirror:



Greg and Alison had once again joined me on the Rallye this year and we had a great time.



We all pulled in the lot around 9:15 or so and got ready for the drivers' meeting.



As usual Scott did a wonderful job organizing the event. He explained how to run the drag strip for those of us who had never done it before.



I couldn't pass up this opportunity so I decided to run a few times. Greg rode with me and Alison stayed behind to capture some images of us. Truth be told I was a little nervous about running Heinz on the strip but he did just fine. Greg tried to give me pointers but I was probably too scared to really hit it hard plus I was uncertain where the end of the track was so I was stopping too early- plus on my third and final run I hopped the wheels a little and it started to worry me as I need my rear end to get back to Ohio! Maybe I'll try out the strip near my house in my E90- sounds like a safer proposition to me.



Gary Beck and his beautiful tuned ///M5 ran more times than I could count...



And Andrew and his wife Cindy ran their 3.0CSi on battery power as their alternator had gone out at this point...



And I have no idea who ran the Sprinter but it was interesting to see...



Greg and I tried our hand at the Shade Tree Mechanic Challenge, but a medal was not to be had this year...



After that we went to the winery. I must admit I was paying close attention to the car to make sure I didn't throw out a center support bearing or guibo, but thankfully Heinz was still as tight as a brick craphouse. Please don't tell Ed Locke I ran his car on the drag strip...



The winery was a great time and Scott's wife did a fantastic job managing the food. I must admit that the sweet tea was a nice touch and I may have consumed and entire jug on my own. And I made a huge sandwich. I may have robbed someone of their lunch and if so my bad!



After procuring a few bottles of wine to take home to my wife I decided to let Greg have a turn at the wheel...



He says he flogged the car but was actually very gentle. We returned to the hotel and I was considering getting in the pool but the parking lot just kept calling my name... and sure enough in rolls Sherman and his wife Jackie in from the long trip from Texas...



And Skip was trying to keep the dirt off his car as well...



Hunter had made it in the night before and decided to polish up his Z4 M Coupe which looks awesome and I need to drive it...





And I had the chance to see the purpose built E30 drag car up close- with an M90 head and a turbo.



Not too long after that Brian and his beautiful wife arrived in their E9x coupe...



We hung out for a while...



...talked cars for a bit...



... and I was even able to get an aerial view of the lot at The Hawthorne.



As the libations continued I captured more images and even saw Brett from the Pittsburgh area roll in with his 2002...



Of course I was checking out the other ///M5s and Mario's engine bay is incredibly clean...



I think Pete (KillerPM) got a free bowl of soup with this hat...



I even managed to go upstairs and register, and the cake was really cool...



However I sat down my first Spaten ever while I was taking that picture and I turned around and *poof* it was gone! I was robbed! (I haven't been drinking at the main events because I had to drive after so I usually miss out on the free beer). Well I got my goodie bag...



And then did what I should have done- returned to the parking lot for more photos and beer!



Of course one of the biggest entrances of the night was Ali Jonny on his bike which we were informed now had a leaky front brake line- ugh!



A taco truck arrived and I pigged out there...





And when I returned to the parking lot I found this team tuning a 2002's carbs...



And the beer continued to flow...





And I stayed up as late as I could keeping in mind that I wanted to be coherent in the morning...



And sometime between 1am and 2am I conquered this hallway to make it to my room...

The Vintage 2012

Day Three- Saturday May 26th 2012.

I once again woke from my slumber to make it out to my planned rendezvous in the Hawthorne's parking lot to have all the E28 ///M5's together at the show. The problem is that I forgot that I originally posted to meet up at 8:30 and I later revised that to 9:15 to allow us a little more time to sleep. However, the main crowd of ///Ms met up at 8:30 and headed to the event. I will give them big props though because they saved me a space with them but there was a barrier blocking the road so I didn't manage to get all the ///Ms grouped as hoped. So after parking I began to check out the cars, including this completely redone ///M5 parked at the top of the hill...



Paul had his tent all setup and him and his wife were dishing out the goodies...



The one benefit to my parking space was that I was under the shade for part of the day, and there was even an awning where we could put our chairs...





I managed to capture a few HDR images at the event...





This is Sia's S54 powered E28, truely an incredible machine which is a wonderful driver so I'm told...





And I was also wowed by Andrew and his wife Cindy's E9 3.0CSi with Cindy being interviewed for a local TV story...





So I continued to meander around and enjoy the cars and people of the event and as I walked back up the hill to I discovered this young lady drawing...





I asked her if she was doing it for a class or something and she just said no, she was just doing it for fun. Myself and a few others then suggested that she start charging owners and she got a chuckle out of that.

I continued to enjoy the company, and my friends continued to enjoy the shady area near my car... this is Ali Jonny and Hunter...



And Alison Flint, Greg's wife...

And as the festivities started to wind down in the afternoon Scott started to get a little loopy...



Sherman and the Canadians enjoyed the shade...



And Skip showed off his sweaty appearance...



The awards were handed out...



And we returned to the hotel. This is Bill Baxter (bbaxter)'s car which is I think a supercharged S50.



And oldskool made himself known...



He was kinda like a celebrity here...



So since we were digging in for the night I decided to acquire more beer...



And the party continued in the parking lot.



Even the squirrels enjoyed the show...



And we drank until we could no longer catch the cooler to get a beer...



And we knew it was time for dinner.



Vance and his girlfriend Angie, Sherman and his lovely wife Jackie and brother-in-law Henry, Greg and Alison, Andrew, Ali Jonny, Hunter and myself all ventured to downtown Winston-Salem for a nice dinner at the Italian place.











And after a long and slightly slow dinner we all stumbled back to the hotel with full bellies...



To continue the libations in the parking lot once again...



Guess who's LandCruiser this is?



Here's a hint...



And I still get a chuckle out of this shirt...



And I might mention that here is Paul and his 2002 which had the headgasket changed in the parking lot that evening...



But alas it was time to watch Sherman do his last burnout of The Vintage and retire to bed for the evening at some point (when? I dunno...) so that I could be coherent for the drive the next day.

That's Sia's S54 swapped E28 and I'm not sure on the color. I'm not an expert color guy.

The Vintage 2012

Day Four, Sunday May 27th, 2012.

I awoke a bit groggy, as is par for the course now days, and managed to get Heinz packed. A sadness came over me as I peered throughout the parking lot and realized that the number of vintage BMWs was slowly dwindling down...



However I still had vacation and friends with me as I was preparing for the Rolling the Twisties event of 2012...

Cleaning? I'm not sure the crime scene unit isn't done in there yet!

That's clongo's turbo car and I don't think I have any more pictures of it. It did look very good though. PM him and he may have more. If I stumble across some I'll let you know.
