headrest repair

i was wondering if anyone knows how to repair the motorized headrests in a 535i. i bought it in this condition, the motors work, but the previous owner said that he took out the headrests to haul something but when he put them back in they didn't work. I'm not sure how to get the motor to engage to the headrest bars. i've had this car for a few years and just decided that it would be a good idea to fix them...
