those are lovely.
The rubber boots are just dust boots, however. There is a bearing in there (at each end), so they may still be good (not likely) and if they are it WON'T be for long. Is there any axial movement at either bearing?
Your new ones will be really stiff compared to these, but if you stick a bolt in each end you'll be able to pivot/position them for install.
Let us know how they affect your handling.

Yeah, I know the dust boots are shot, but the bearings are worse. In fact, I've sat it back in there for the photo - you can sort-of see the angle on the right one. Theres no actual bushing to speak of. Just dust. Crispy toasted, I'd say.

I take it from the pic that you didn't do subframe bushings at the same time? Was the difference from the bones alone noticable?

what is they're intended purpose? I know what they do once we change them, but, what ere they even there for to begin with?

The rear pitman arms are a lateral link intended to stop motion in the plane defined by the axis of a line drawn perpendicular to the fasteners of the pitman arm and through the middle of the narrow portion, and long axis, of the arm.
