E28 M5 with S54

Post by Teamasr3 »

Hi everyone,

Some friends and I just launched a site that allows car buffs like us to create a portfolio page of the cars we built/own/in progress etc., regardless of make/model.

Here is my page, including the S54 M5, which ChuckNE built (hi chuck) and I accessorized.

Very nicely done. I have to ask; what happened to the original S38?

Nebraska_e28, thank you for the comment....Yes, you are correct, I have the one, the first, e28 s54, created by the talented Doc Brown also known as Chuck. hi Chuck.

Here is the car that started the S54 crave.

How can it be verified that this is the first?

Doesn't matter who is first. What matters is that this is open source so that the builds in the future are easier and better. I owned one of the first s14 powered 2002's (I didn't build it - Ben Thongsai and Gary Bossert did - I rescued it after Gary sold it and brought it back to snuff). It was not the first, but in the first few. What was important was that that build and several others were well documented to make it easier to replicate. There have been many since. My last M2 and others like Roy W's (both clearly better than the originals) were made easier by a body of knowledge that enthusiasts provided. I take my hat off to all those who document the process to make the next edition easier. I don't think there will ever be the number of s54 e28s that there are M2's but one never knows. I certainly would rather have one than an M2. Maybe one of these days Sia will just have too many cars and want to sell his!

I would say that I started collecting info and resources as well as the engine, etc...FIRST and I believe we were working on the same type of project at the same time and mine took a little longer at the end because of ECU work and Exhaust.

I wanted to make sure that I could integrate the whole capability of the S54 (Vanos system) in to my e28 including the M Sport button, also retain the Stock functionality of the other electric or electronics A/C and look.

So to say his or mine first will always be debatable, frankly I am glad to see another person have done this and enjoying it. ;)

Yup, doesn't matter. I know Chuck worked on this car for a while. He said that he had been working on it since spring of 2010 when he told me about it (he was leery of posting it to the forum for fear that the purists would freak.) I found out about it when I sold him the glass roof that the car is wearing now before he posted it to his build thread. I can't wait to see the car, as I had emailed Chuck extensively about it while the swap was going on. It would also be very nice if I could make time this year at Vintage to actually ride in Sia's car instead of just gawking at it in the parking lot of the Hawthorne.

Paul, I PMed Chuck when he completed his Exhaust system to see if he could make another similar headers and the down pipe in order to save some time, but he didn’t have time or something in that nature, however, lucky me SF found a great hot rod builder that was extremely great fabricator so took a little time but the result was well worth to wait.

I was trying to get his awesome mounts made, too, but he was very busy. I'm going to see about it now that it has been brought up again. I think M5x/S5x motors are a natural for the E28 chassis and the work you two did to pioneer the ultimate swap from that engine family should pave the way for future work in that area.

So what does it cost for such a swap? That motor has such a wide powerband. Very beautiful power train. And what happens with the rest of the drive train? I'm assuming a smg trans, and custom driveshaft?

From what I was able to calculate from my investigations into this swap, you're going to spend $10k before you even turn a wrench.

I want to see these two cars together but I fear the world would be sucked into a singularity of awesomeness.

Sia, no hard feelings taken, I am just a car nut and appreciate both what I build/drive and what others build and drive.
