Hey gang,
I want to finally do the classic E34 brake upgrade, ideally the 540i calipers. However, while searching it appears they are $1,000+ these days... Although, I'm seeing aftermarket options for 10% of that at AutoZone... ( https://www.autozone.com/brakes-and-tra ... ke-caliper )
1) Has anyone done this upgrade without getting the OEMs?
2) Is it really that detrimental to get OEM on this? (Should I not do this if I can't get OEM?)
3) Where are people getting these things these days, aside from a junkyard or waiting for someone to sell their used set?
Thanks1
Any using non-OEM E34 calipers?

I have 840ci brembo calipers & rotors on the front of my 540i. These calipers bolt directly to front struts and have a great selection of pads.

Refurbed 540/740 calipers are available from various companies. I think Stoptech even sells powder coated pairs. Be sure to get calipers that include the mounting brackets. While I rarely shop RockAuto, I do review from time to time to see what is available. There's two acceptable choices. And you can always rebuild with quality rebuild kits if the components are suspect. I bought some for a 535 project and rebuilt with Ate rubber components... about $10 a corner.
